20 kills. Whitmarsh's stats included 12 attacks, seven digs, five kills and
four blocks.
Canyon Ceman: "We worked very hard today and we're playing well right now. It
really got hot out there on the court and we might have run out of gas if we
had to play a third game."
Mike Whitmarsh: "Father time is catching up to me, but I'm having right now and
to win some matches is a bonus. There's more and more good young players coming
onto the beach with every tournament, but my experience really helps,
especially because the smaller court makes the game much more mental than it
used to be. As long as I can stay healthy and I'm still having fun, I'll keep
playing."
Scott Akayatubby/Eduardo Bacil (5) vs. Casey Jennings/Sean Rosenthal (20)
Game one set the tone for a very tight, hard-fought match with 14 ties and to
lead changes. The first lead change didn't come until 19-18 when
Jennings/Rosenthal went ahead. Akayatubby/Bacil tied at 19, then 20 before
scoring the fial two points for the 22-20 win. Jenny's shot went just long to
end game one.
Game two was almost as close, with eight ties, three lead changes before
Jennings/Rosenthal pulled off the 21-19 victory.  Akayatubby/Bacil held an
early 8-4 lead, Jennings/Rosenthal scored three straight to 8-7 and had their
own three point lead at 18-15 and 19-16. The final was 21-19 for Jennings/Rosenthal.
In the tie-breaking third game, Akayatubby played in control with leads of
4-1, 7-2, 8-3, 9-4, 11-5, 12-6 before halting a three-point rally to earn a
15-10 victory to capture the match. Bacil scored his team's 14th point on a
vicious over the top kill. Akayatubby ended the match with a cross court kill.

attacks, 10 digs, 28 kills. Bacil helped out with 15 attacks, eight digs, eight
kills, two aces and two service winners.
Scott Akayatubby: "The sand's really hot out there which drains your energy.
It feels good to be out there and compete in between the banners. Diving,
competing, getting sweaty and sandy, it just makes a body feel good. There's
pain when I warm up so I take it slow and easy like the old guys. We played hard
today and converted enough opportunities to win. Rally scoring and the smaller
court is great for the fans, makes the games a lot closer, but it really
tests your stamina."
Mike Lambert/Colin Smith (19 seed) vs. David Fischer/Jerry Graham (22)

one with a 21-13 win. After trailing 2-1, the eventual winners tied it at 2-2,

Colin Smith: "This is our first tournament playing together and neither of us
had played Fischer/Graham so this is all gravy for us. We were scoring when we
really had to have it. When we get used to playing together, we can improve and
be even more of a threat. But this is great."
Mike Lambert: "We relaxed a little bit in the second game and they took
advantage of our laziness. We came back with some strong hits in the third game
when it really counted."
