LAS VEGAS, NEV. - Led by the top-seeded tandems of Eric Fonoimoana/Dax
Holdren
and Holly McPeak/Elaine Youngs, the semifinal matches are set for the
$150,000
Paul Mitchell AVP Shoot Out at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino following
the final
quarterfinal matches here Friday (September 6) for both men and women.
The second of three days of competition ended Friday when Matt Gage
and Jim
Menges won the Paul Mitchell AVP Shoot Out "Battle of the Sexes" by
defeating
McPeak and Youngs 17-21, 21-19 and 15-10 in the 60-minute exhibition
on the
Hard Rock sand. Menges, winner of 46 "open" tournament titles,
and Gage, who
captured 26 open tournament crowns, last played competitively in 1982
when they
won three tournaments.
The AVP Tour is making its seventh and final stop on the 2002 schedule
at the
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino under the lights in a single-elimination
format
competition. The top eight ranked men's and women's teams are
competing in the
Paul Mitchell AVP Shoot Out.
The winning teams will share the $30,000 first-place prize Saturday
evening,
the largest payday on the 2002 AVP Tour as Saturday's play starts at
1:30 p.m.
(PDT). The finals are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. The
men's final of the
Paul Mitchell AVP Shoot Out will be televised on Fox Sports Net September
19 at
3 p.m. The women's finals will be broadcast on the Oxygen Network
September 14
at 5 p.m.
While the McPeak (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Youngs (Durango, Colo.)
won
their quarterfinal match Thursday prior to their exhibition Friday,
Fonoimoana
(Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Holdren (Santa Barbara, Calif.) extended
their
domestic winning streak to 13-straight matches Friday.
Winners of the last two AVP Tour stops in Manhattan Beach, Calif., and
Chicago,
Ill., Fonoimoana and Holdren defeated eighth-seeded Albert Hannemann
(Torrance,
Calif.) and Jeff Nygaard (Los Angeles, Calif.) 21-14 and 21-17 in Friday's
final match prior to the exhibition. Fonoimoana and Holdren, who
also won the
2002 AVP Tour opener in Huntington Beach, Calif., have now compiled
a 33-4
domestic match mark this season. The pair has now won both their
matches
against Hannemann and Nygaard this year.
Friday's other highlight saw three-time Olympic Gold Medallists and
beach
volleyball legend Karch Kiraly past the $3-million mark in career earnings
on
sand as he and Brent Doble eliminated fifth-seeded Stein Metzger (Honolulu,
Hi.) and Kevin Wong (Pearl City, Hi.) 21-19 and 29-27 in 63 minutes.
The
fourth-seeded Kiraly and Doble have now won the last two matches against
Metzger and Wong, who won the first meeting this season between the
two teams
in Huntington Beach.
With Kiraly (San Clemente, Calif.) now totaling $3,001,258 in his career,
he
and Doble (Capistrano Beach, Calif.) will be seeking their second AVP
Tour
title this season after capturing June's Santa Barbara stop. However,
Kiraly
and Doble will first have to defeat Fonoimoana and Holdren in Saturday's
first
men's semifinals.
Friday's other winners included second-seeded Annett Davis/Jenny Johnson
Jordan
and third-seeded Dianne DeNecochea/Barbra Fontana in the women's play.
Davis
(Tarzana, Calif.) and Johnson Jordan (Tarzana, Calif.) ousted seventh-seeded
Angie Akers (Long Beach, Calif.) and Jen Pavley (Agoura Hills, Calif.)
21-15
and 21-19.
DeNecochea (San Diego, Calif.) and Fontana (Manhattan Beach, Calif.)
eliminated
sixth-seeded Katy Eldridge (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Jennifer Meredith
(Manhattan
Beach, Calif.) 21-16 and 21-19. Both Davis/Johnson Jordan DeNecochea/Fontana
are now 3-0 against their Friday challengers.
Thursday's winners included McPeak/Youngs and Lisa Arce/Linda Hanley
in the
women's competition and Canyon Ceman/Mike Whitmarsh and Mike Lambert/Lee
LeGrande in the men's bracket. The sixth-seeded Lambert (Honolulu,
Hi.) and
LeGrande (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) posted the only upset Thursday by eliminating
third-seeded Eduardo Bacil (El Segundo, Calif.) and Frederico Souza
(Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil) 21-16 and 21-11 in 36 minutes. Bacil and Souza
had won two of
the previous three matches from Lambert and LeGrande this season, including
a
21-17 and 21-18 semifinal win in the last AVP event in Chicago last
month.
McPeak and Youngs scored a 21-11 and 21-7 win over eighth-seeded Stephanie
Cox
(Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Jen Holdren (Santa Barbara, Calif.).
McPeak and
Youngs, who have won both matches with Cox and Holdren this season,
will play
Saturday against fourth-seeded Arce (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Hanley
(Pacific
Palisades, Calif.) while DeNecochea and Fontana challenge Davis and
Johnson
Jordan.
Arce, who won last year's Queen of the Beach competition at the Hard
Rock, and
Hanley eliminated fifth-seeded Nancy Mason (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and
Rachel
Wacholder (El Segundo, Calif.) 21-17 and 21-18. It was the third-straight
win
this season for Arce and Hanley over Mason and Wacholder this season.
Mason
and Wacholder's only win in the series between the two teams was in
June's New
Jersey stop in Belmar while Arce and Hanley won last month in Manhattan
Beach,
Calif., and Chicago.
In Thursday's other men's match, second-seeded Ceman (Manhattan Beach,
Calif.)
and Whitmarsh (San Diego, Calif.) ousted seventh-seeded Todd Rogers
(Santa
Barbara, Calif.) and Sean Scott (San Diego, Calif.) 21-17 and 21-18.
Ceman and
Whitmarsh, who are now 2-0 against Rogers and Scott this season, face
Lambert
and LeGrande in Saturday's final semifinal match with the winner advancing
to
the title match against either Fonoimoana/Holdren or Doble/Kiraly.
The teams of McPeak/Youngs (Huntington, Hermosa, Santa Barbara and Belmar)
and
Davis/Johnson Jordah (Manhattan and Chicago) have capture the previous
six AVP
Tour titles this season. McPeak and Youngs defeated DeNecochea
and Fontana for
the first three titles in Huntington, Hermosa, Santa Barbara before
defeating
Davis and Johnson Jordan for the Belmar crown. Davis and Johnson
Jordan
defeated McPeak and Youngs in the Manhattan and Chicago finals.
Other 2002 AVP Tour winners competing at the Hard Rock are Hermosa Beach
winners Hannemann and Nygaard (Los and Belmar champions Ceman and Whitmarsh,
the 1996 Altanta Olympic Games Silver Medallists. Whitmarsh won
the 2000 King
of the Beach title at the Hard Rock with Wong the 2001 Las Vegas winner.
