Getting to Know Lisa Arce

After 10 seasons of professional doubles volleyball experience Association of Volleyball Professionals’ Lisa Arce has accomplished a lot.  The 33-year-old volleyball Redondo Beach, Calif. resident, who took home the 2001 AVP Queen of the Beach honor, earned $18,428 on the 2002 AVP Tour with partner Linda Hanley. Arce and Hanley tied for third place at the Sept. 5-7 Paul Mitchell AVP Shootout in Las Vegas.  Her $41,525 in 2001 AVP prize money, earned with partner Holly McPeak, was tops and complimented the University of California graduate’s $42,625 on the Fèdèration Internationale de Volleyball World Tour nicely during the same season.  
With 20 tournament championships to her credit Arce’s combined earnings amass to $606,760. Her Women’s Professional Volleyball Association honors include WPVA Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Player (1995), Best Blocker (1997), Best Hitter (1997) and Most Aces (1997).  
Arce took time to answer the following questions from the AVP staff.

What do you like best about playing on the AVP?
I love the competition, the beaches and the fans.

What do you like least about playing on the AVP?
I would like to be able to play in more cities around the country.

How long have you been playing volleyball?
I started playing volleyball with my brother Rick in 1981. We played in our backyard.

What made you start playing volleyball?
My brother played a lot and I liked to copy him. Also, the high school team in our area is really good and I wanted to play on the team. Now I help coach the Mira Costa High School team.

Who is your favorite volleyball player?
I really enjoyed watching the Marine Street guys...Mike Dodd, Brent Frohoff, Tim Hovland...

Who is the biggest inspiration in your life?
My mother...she always takes care of everyone else first, has a smile on her face and loves to watch her kids play.

What is your pre match ritual?
I don't like superstitions, so I have to do things a little different every tourney. I like to have a little quiet time after warm-ups so I can focus on the basics of the game.

What is your favorite music?
I like just about everything but hard rock and extreme rap. My favorites are old school funk and The Dave Matthews Band.

What other hobbies do you have?
I enjoy coaching the Mira Costa girls’ volleyball team, gardening, spending time with family and friends and reading.

Who is your favorite athlete?
I like to follow the Lakers and I gain inspiration from Olympic athletes of all kinds.

What is your favorite movie?
The Silence of the Lambs

What is your favorite book?
The Giving Tree

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Work on projects at the house with my husband Andy.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Cookies and Cream (Dreyers)

What is your favorite color?
Blue

What is your fondest volleyball memory?
Winning my first professional beach event with my friend Holly McPeak in Puerto Rico (1996).

What is your favorite vacation spot?
Kauai, Hawaii
