PRO BEACH ACTION CONTINUES AS TOP SEEDS ADVANCE
AT THE PAUL MITCHELL FT. LAUDERDALE OPEN
Ft. Lauderdale, FL (April 5, 2003) - Pro beach action continues with the
men's and women's top seeds advancing at the Paul Mitchell Ft. Lauderdale
Open. Top-seeded men's duo Eric Fonoimoana (Hermosa Beach, CA) and Dax Holdren
(Goleta, CA) breezed through quarterfinals and advance to Sunday's semi-final
with a two set victory over Paul Baxter (Venice, CA) and Carl Henkel (Redondo
Beach, CA) 21-10, 21-13.
Fonoimoana and Holdren will face Matt Fuerbringer (Hermosa Beach, CA) and
Casey Jennings (Manhattan Beach, CA) who defeated number four-seeds Eduardo
Bacil (Redondo Beach, CA) and partner Fred Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
21-17, 14-21, 15-13 in an earlier match and then outlasted Dain Blanton (Laguna
Beach, CA) and Jeff Nygard (Los Angeles, CA) 21-17, 15-21,21-19.
The other men's semi will feature number two-seeds Brent Doble (Dana Point,
CA) and Karch Kiraly (San Clemente, CA) who defeated Ian Clark (Pacific Palisades,
CA) and Scott Davenport (Hermosa Beach, CA) 21-11, 21-17. Doble and Kiraly
will battle number three-seeds Canyon Ceman (Los Angeles, CA) and
Mike Whitmarsh (San Diego, CA). Ceman and Whitmarsh knocked out the sixth-seeded
team Stein Metzger (Honolulu, CA), and partner Kevin Wong (Hermosa Beach,
CA) 21-17, 22-20.
Advancing to the women's semi-finals was the top-seeded team Holly McPeak
(Manhattan Beach, CA) and Elaine Youngs (Durango, CO) who triumphed through
quarterfinal action by defeating Linda Hanley (Pacific Palisades, CA) and
Liz Masakayan (Los Angeles, CA) 21-14, 21-19. They will face Lisa Arce (Redondo
Beach, CA) and Rachel Wacholder (El Segundo, CA) who advanced by defeating
fourth-seeds Carrie Busch (El Segundo, CA) and Leanne Schuster-McSorley (Manhattan
Beach, CA) 18-21, 21-17, 16-14.
Other women's semi will match up second-seeded Misty May (Long Beach, CA)
and Kerri Walsh (Manhattan Beach, CA) against third-seeds Annett Davis (Valencia,
CA) and Jenny Johnson Jordan (Tarzana, CA). May and Walsh advanced with a
solid victory over Heather Lowe (Redondo Beach, CA) and Jenny Pavley (Augora
Hills, CA) 23-21, 21-7, while Davis and Johnson Jordan outdueled Dianne DeNechochea
(San Diego, CA) and Nancy Mason (Redondo Beach) 18-21,22-20,15-12.
Sunday's play begins at the Sheraton Yankee Clipper with both the men and
women's semi-finals at 8:30 a.m. The women's championship match is set for
1:30 p.m. followed by the men's final match at 3 p.m. The Paul Mitchell Ft.
Lauderdale Open is the first stop on the AVP Nissan Series.
