A preview of next week's $200,000 Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball Olympic Challenge Series in Deerfield Beach will be held Saturday in the season-opening Mikasa Florida Beach Volleyball 2000 Series at the Fort Lauderdale Sheraton Yankee Clipper. Most of the teams entered in next Thursday and Friday's pro tournament qualifier are entered Saturday for a final tuneup. Jimmy Van Zwieten of Pompano Beach and veteran Eric Wurts of Fort Lauderdale head the men's field. Terry Van Dyke of Deerfield Beach and Wendy Martin of Wesley Chapel are the top women. AVP tour veteran Mark Paluuhi is looking for a partner to play with. Next week's qualifier is shaping up to be California vs. Florida. Among top local players entered in both tournaments are David DiPierro and Todd Hart of Pompano Beach, Gaston Macau of Coral Gables, Brian Rutland of Boca Raton and Bill Maik of Cape Coral, Jay Mears of Pompano Beach and Drew Pelski of Fort Lauderdale, Dana Camacho of Fort Lauderdale, Matt Heath of Delray Beach, Scott Rau of Fort Lauderdale, Lynda Street of Jupiter, David Krobatsch of Fort Lauderdale, Doug Nascimento of Deerfield Beach and top high school players Sandi Fox and Kelly Haan. The top-seeded pro teams for the Oldsmobile event are Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson and Liz Masakayan and Elaine Youngs. Both teams are favorites to make the Olympic Games. Saturday's one-day tournament begins at 9 a.m. with the finals expected to start at 5 p.m. The Boca Raton-based Exclusive Sports Marketing Bud Light Beach Volleyball Series also opens this weekend in Pensacola Beach. The series, the oldest and largest pro-am tour in the Southeast, comprises players of all ages and abilities. The series offers $8,000 in grand prix prize money. Male and female open players will earn grand prix points at all 14 tournaments. Points will be based on tournament participation and individual finishes in tournament play. Final standings will be determined after the conclusion of the Sept. 8-9 Bud Light Beach Volleyball National Championships in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
Weather a plus for locals in pros' return

DEERFIELD BEACH -- The two-day qualifying tournament for the Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball Olympic Challenge Series could be as exciting as the main draw. With Olympic silver medalist Mike Whitmarsh and several other top players in the April 13-14 qualifier, the showdown for the final eight spots in the 16-team main draw will come down to California vs. Florida. The wind and heat at Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier could help local players. "If we get those kind of conditions, we'll definitely have the advantage," said Jimmy Van Zwieten of Pompano Beach, who ranks among the top 60 players on the AVP tour. "The local players are training longer and harder for this tournament," he said. "It's had all the players motivated. When it's in your town, you want to put on a good show." The local field is led by veteran Eric Wurts of Fort Lauderdale, David DiPierro of Pompano Beach, Dana Camacho of Fort Lauderdale and Doug Nascimento of Deerfield Beach, who at 20 is considered one of the sport's most promising stars. Former national champions Teri Van Dyke of Deerfield Beach, Wendy Martin of Wesley Chapel and Lynda Street of Jupiter head the women's qualifying field. The qualifier leads to the return of pro beach volleyball when 53 teams compete for potential Olympic spots April 13-16. Beach volleyball legend and 1996 Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson are the top-seeded men's team. Liz Masakayan and Elaine Youngs are the top-seeded women's team. The challenge series will help determine nominees for international events like the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour and the Olympic Games. Sharon Robb can be reached at srobb@sun-sentinel.com.
Local pair rolls on opening day By SHARON ROBB Apr. 13, 2000
DEERFIELD BEACH -- Pro beach volleyball veteran Eric Wurts of Fort Lauderdale and rookie Jimmy Van Zwieten of Pompano Beach are one win away from the main draw of the $200,000 Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball Olympic Challenge Series. The pair, playing in heavy winds Thursday, picked up two victories on opening day at the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier, moving them into the winners' bracket. The No. 14 seeds play No. 11 Jerry Graham of Hermosa Beach, Calif., and Chris Makos of Playa Del Rey, Calif., at 11 a.m. today for one of eight remaining berths in the 16-team main draw. Lou Messier and Doug Mathews, both of Fort Lauderdale, also advanced. Wurts, 40, and Van Zwieten, 22, defeated Kevin Craig and Doug Nascimento 15-10 in 39 minutes, then defeated Brent Frohoff of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Adam Jewell of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., 15-11 in 38 minutes. "Jimmy got us off to a great start," Wurts said. "He had five aces on the first-side change, dug a couple balls and had a few more aces after that. He was on fire." Wurts played full time on the AVP tour for 13 seasons before a torn right Achilles' tendon sidelined him. With a family and full-time job, beach volleyball went on hold until teaming with Van Zwieten, one of the most promising players in the sport. "It was a long process coming back from an injury," Wurts said. "I love to play. I don't know if I could sustain it for 12 tournaments. I'm still not in the best shape. I don't have the stamina I used to have, mainly because I didn't do a lot of conditioning. I just go out there and have fun. I never worried about playing again, but my competitive fires never stopped burning." Van Zwieten, a two-time national champion who played his first AVP tour event at 19, is a 2004 Olympic hopeful. "I like playing with Eric because he has a lot of experience and he's been on the tour a long time," Van Zwieten said. "He's been teaching me a lot. It's nice to play with someone that's accomplished as much as he has. I want to try to raise my level of play and try to climb the rankings." Reece withdraws Gabrielle Reece withdrew from the tournament because of a knee injury. It is the same knee she had surgery on in August. Patty Dodd will replace Reece and play with Jennifer Meredith of Malibu, Calif. Dodd became a U.S. citizen in May and can compete for the U.S. ... Carl Henkel withdrew due to a hernia. Henkel had surgery in January after the Brazilian event and is recovering. Sinjin Smith will play with Sean Scott. ... California leads Florida teams 5-2 after the first day. By SHARON ROBB Apr. 14, 2000
DEERFIELD BEACH -- Fort Lauderdale teammates Wayne Matthews and Lou Messier were the only South Florida survivors who advanced from the qualifier to today's main draw of the $200,000 Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball Olympic Challenge Series. Matthews and Messier, frequent winners on the Bud Light Beach Volleyball Series, worked their way out of the losers' bracket with a 3-1 record at the rain-delayed competition at the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier. Matthews and Messier, the No. 21 seeds, defeated Marcos Macau of Coral Gables and James Walls of Fort Lauderdale, 15-6, in 30 minutes. Favorites Jimmy Van Zwieten of Pompano Beach and Eric Wurts of Fort Lauderdale were eliminated after two losses. They lost 15-1 to Jerry Graham of Hermosa Beach, Calif., and Chris Makos of Playa Del Rey, Calif., in 25 minutes. They also lost to Bryan Ivie and Collin Smith, 15-11 in an hour. Olympic silver medalist Mike Whitmarsh and Dave Swatik were among 12 teams that advanced to the main draw. Swatik and Whitmarsh, who won a medal in the sport's medal debut at the 1996 Olympics with former partner Mike Dodd, won 15-9 over No. 7 Aaron Boss and Stein Metzger. Other men's teams advancing from the qualifier with perfect records were top-seeded Dax Holdren/Todd Rogers, fourth-seeded Canyon Ceman/Brian Lewis and 11th-seeded Jerry Graham/Chris Makos. Qualifying for the last four men's Main Draw berths after a 31/2-hour rain delay were third-seeded Brent Frohoff/Adam Jewell, seventh-seeded Aaron Boss/Stein Metzger and ninth-seeded Ivie/Smith. Two women's teams earned main draw berths to join Thursday's four "money" round qualifiers. The teams of fourth-seeded Valinda Hilleary/Liz Pagano and ninth-seeded Karen Helyer/Karen Hoyt won matches before the rain delay and advanced to today's main draw. Today's schedule begins at 9 a.m. After the rain delay, second-seeded Danalee Bragado and Ali Wood rebounded from an 8-4 deficit to win 15-11 over 12th-seeded Wendy Martin and Teri Van Dyke of Deerfield Beach to advance. Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball Quotes-4/15/00 from Deerfield,Fla. Brent Frohoff after his 15-4 win with Adam Jewell over top-seeded Adam Johnson and Karch Kiraly. "Since Adam and I are playing in our first event together, this was a very satisfying team. To beat a team like Johnson and Kiraly in our first event together is huge. They are a very consistent and experience team. I feel we were help by playing four qualification matches to get used to the windy and wet weather conditions. By playing in the qualifier, we were able to get our game together. It also helped by having Adam's service game. We got the lead early with his strong serves. This will be a tough tournament because all the teams are very competitive. The weather will equalize a lot of the matches. It should be interesting." Karrie Poppinga after her 15-6 win with Angela Rock over top-seeded Liz Masakayan and Elaine Youngs. Poppinga missed the 1999 season as she gave birth to Avery Lei on April 22, 1999. "I didn't know what to expect after being away from beach competition for more than a year. Angela and I had only three days of practice together before Thursday's opening qualification rounds. It helped to play a couple of matches prior to today's matches. Angela had a great serving game. My job is to protect the net with some blocks. It's a good start with another tough match later Saturday (against fifth-seeded Misty May and Holly McPeak). I am tired." Angela Rock after the win over Masakayan/Youngs. "We were ready to play while Liz and Elaine played tired. I am just focusing on my play to help my partner. I am not going to worry about winning. I am just focused on my side of the net and just let things happen. My left knee is hurting and I am tired after two matches. I glad we just have one match left today." Holly McPeak on their match against Angela Rock and Karrie Poppinga when down 5-0: "I didn't like our start at all, but I wasn't worried. I knew that we were going to settle right back into it and tie it up. It was a little shaky start. We don't want to start like that, but I was confident that we'd settle into our games and comeback." Holly McPeak on the play of Angela Rock: "Angela is a great player. I always have respect for her. I know her game and she knows mine. We've been playing against each other for 10 years." Misty May discussing their teams goals and things to work on: "I'd like to keep working and see my game improve a lot. And as a team, we want to win. I mean, we practice everyday, we participate in the tournaments and we want to win." Misty May on playing as much as possible: "The more you play, the more confident you feel in certain situations."
Ian Clark on their opponents, Holdren and Rodgers:
"One thing, Todd and Dax are a great team, a great ball control team. And I've seen it a million Times, they can be down 14-9 or whatever, and you can never count them out. They can Always come back and defeat you. They never give up.They'll come after you.And That's what we did in the game.We closed them off.We didn't give them any opportunity, Or any momentum. That was important."
Clark on some of their strategy:
"On the bad side (with the wind), we were trying to serve the left side player, because if The left side player doesn't pass the ball straight ahead, the ball blows, and then the Set is much more difficult to handle for them."
Clark on what he and Boullianne will be concentrating on this season:
"I am not giving up my Olympic hopes by any means. We have a little ace in the Hole in the sense that we have the only tournament win (FIVB Acapulco in 1999). And It is going on eight tournaments, the most points in eight tournaments, and that tournament Win counts as the most points you can add. And it is the top two teams with the most Points. So our point total there is good, although we did have some pretty lousy tournaments On the European swing. So there's still 10 tournaments and so we are by no means out of It."
Fontana on the match against Davis and Johnson Jordan: I think that was a great match for us. It was a tight game all the way through. Jenny and Annett were playing well. And I was happy to pull that off, especially in the wind. Fontana on how the wind effects play: The tough thing about the wind is that it just throws the crap shoot factor into it. It doesn't necessarily mean the best play goes down or the best team wins because we've got these gusts of wind moving the ball and it is really hard to play technically well when it's this windy. Arce on the match: The start wasn't where we wanted to be. I mean when you are on the bad side, we wanted to try and get points every time we were over there and to start out 5-0 wasn't good. And it was a tough battle. It was tough for us to keep the score even. Third-seeded men's tandem Dain Blanton/Eric Fonoimoana and second-seeded women's team Lisa Arce/Barbra Fontana were also unbeaten Saturday to advance to the semi-finals, where the final four teams in each competition await the winners of Sunday's opening contender's bracket matches at 9 a.m. in the $200,000 event.
The top-seeded teams of Adam Johnson/Karch Kiraly and Liz Masakayan/Elaine Youngs were eliminated Saturday for the battle for the $20,000 first-place prizes in both the men's and women's competition. Both teams won only two of four matches Saturday to place seventh in the Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball Olympic Challenge event.
Boullianne and Clark, the last United States men's team to win a FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event, advance to the semi-finals with a 15-10 win over ninth-seeded Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers. Boullianne and Clark captured the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event in Acapulco, Mexico April 11, 1999.
May and McPeak, who are playing in only their third event together after placing ninth and fifth in the last two FIVB events in Brazil, scored a 15-10 win over ninth-seeded Karrie Poppinga and Angela Rock to advance to the semi-finals. Poppinga was playing her first pro beach event since last April when she gave birth to her daughter.
Blanton and Fonoimoana advance to the semi-finals with a 15-5 win over second-seeded Rob Heidger and Kevin Wong, who are the top-ranked United States team on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour (No. 7). Arce and Fontana rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat third-seeded Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan 15-12 to advance to the women's semi-finals.
Four teams remain in the men's and women's contender's bracket with the winners of Sunday's opening matches advancing to the semi-finals. Fourth-seeded Linda Hanley and Nancy Reno led from the start to defeat Masakayan and Youngs 15-7 to advance to Sunday's play, where they face Davis and Johnson Jordan. Masakayan and Youngs had won the last women's FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event in February in Brazil.
Poppinga and Rock face 13th-seeded Danalee Bragado and Ali Wood in Sunday's other opening women's match. Both teams had to qualify for Saturday's Main Draw competition. Bragado and Wood rallied from 8-0 deficit to defeat sixth-seeded Carrie Busch and Leanne Schuster 15-13 to advance to Sunday's first matches.
Tenth-seeded Mike Whitmarsh and David Swatik eliminated Johnson and Kiraly 15-13 to advance to their opening match Sunday against Holdren and Rogers. Whitmarsh captured the Silver Medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, where he and Mike Dodd lost the Gold Medal finale to Kiraly and Kent Steffes.
Heidger and Wong battle for a semi-final berth Sunday against 14th-seeded Aaron Boss and Stein Metzger. After losing their opening match Saturday, Boss and Metzger won three-straight contender's bracket matches, including a 15-11 win over 15th-seeded Bryan Ivie and Collin Smith to advance to Sunday's play. Boss and Metzger won two of their three qualifying matches to advance to Saturday's Main Draw.
Sunday's medal rounds begin at 12 p.m. with the Bronze Medal winners sharing $10,000 for third-place in both the men's and women's competition. The finals are scheduled to start at 2 p.m., with the final two teams seeking $20,000 for first-place while the losers settle for $14,000. Deerfield Alero Sunday Final Report
Deerfield Beach, FL April 16, 2000 - Weather conditions remained beautiful throughout today’s matches.
Men’s Gold Medal Match results:
Dax Holdren/Todd Rogers def. Bill Boullianne/Ian Clark 15-9 Holdren/Rogers take the Gold and split $20,000 Boullianne/Clark take the Silver and split $14,000
This is Holdren/Rogers’ third open win and all the best US men players competed in this Deerfield Beach Alero tournament. Each of their wins in 1998 and 1999 were “footnoted” because some strong teams like Johnson/Kiraly and Blanton/Fonoimoana were absent from those tournaments. Although Holdren/Rogers never went up against Karch Kiraly/Adam Johnson in this tournament, it is likely they could have beat them if they had. While Holdren/Rogers have beaten virtually every other US team at one time or another in open tournament play, they have never beaten Kiraly/Johnson in an actual tournament.
Men’s Bronze Medal Match results:
Dain Blanton/Eric Fonoimoana def. Rob Heidger/Kevin Wong 15-12 Blanton/Fonoimoana take the Bronze and split $10,000 Heidger/Wong take 4th place and split $7,500
Women’s Gold Medal Match results:
Misty May/Holly McPeak def. Lisa Arce/Barbara Fontana 15-8 May/McPeak take the Gold and split $20,000 Arce/Fontana take the Silver and split $14,000
This is May/McPeak’s first open win in the US and undoubtedly not their last. Misty May AND Holly McPeak were awesome. It must be tough for their opposing team to decide which one of them to serve. While Misty is not considered exceedingly tall at 5’10”, her blocking ability is something to be reckoned with. Her jump serve on the beach is as effective as it was at The Beach (Long Beach State University). Both Misty and Holly were running down balls on defensive and touching them if not getting them up. When hitting against big blocks, such as those of Lisa Arce, Annett Davis, and Jenny Johnson Jordan, neither Misty or Holly seemed to have much trouble jumping out of the sand and either crushing the ball to the sand, tooling the block, or soft-hitting the ball to open court.
Holly McPeak’s determination to win is well documented. Misty May’s determination and dedication is no different from Holly’s. Walking away from her 17-16 victory over David/Johnson Jordan, Misty was heard to say she wants to become a much better player in response to a compliment of her awesome performance. There is no doubt - she is the real thing.
Women’s Bronze Medal Match results:
Annett Davis/Jenny Johnson Jordan won by forfeit. David/Johnson Jordan win the Bronze Medal and split $10,000 Karrie Popinga/Angela Rock win 4th place and split $7,500
Additional match notes (men):
Adam Johnson/Karch Kiraly were seeded first in the tournament. They were put into the losers bracket in their first round game by 16th seeded Brent Frohoff/Adam Jewell by a score of 15-4! Frohoff/Jewell were on fire after having made it into the main draw via the qualifier on Thursday and Friday. Johnson/Kiraly’s first game in the losers bracket was on an outer court but it had a huge crowd around it. It was against Brent Doble/Lee LeGrande who took Johnson/Kiraly down several times last year, but not this time in 2000. Johnson/Kiraly defeated Doble/LeGrande 15-9. Johnson/Kiraly then went on to prevail over Jerry Graham/Chris Makos 15-4. It was David Swatik/Mike Whitmarsh who then eliminated Johnson/Kiraly from the tournament in a 15-13 battle on another outer court that was well attended by fans. Swatik/Whitmarsh looked good, but they were taken out the tournament in their next game against Dax Holdren/Todd Roger, who went on to win the tournament. Johnson/Kiraly took 7th place. They came close to finishing much higher. Some of Johnson’s incredible effectiveness jump serving is diminished with the Mikasa ball.
Aaron Boss/Stein Metzger took 5th place in their first outing together. Boss was heard to say that his partner carried him through the tournament, but Metzger had nothing but good things to say about Boss. Boss/Metzger were put into the loser bracket in a 16-14 epic battle against Dain Blanton/Eric Fonoimoana that took an hour and ten minutes. Blanton/Fonoimoana went on to take the Bronze. Boss/Metzger were eliminated from the tournament by Heidger/Wong who went on to take 4th place.
In the next US tournament for men, the AVP Delray Beach event, Boss and Metzger will be playing with different partners. Boss, who played with Dan Castillo last year, is playing Delray with Matt Lyles. Matt Lyles played with Wayne Seligson last year, but Seligson is currently nursing a shoulder injury and Dan Castillo has another commitment during Delray. Metzger will be playing with Ian Clark, while Clark’s long-time partner Bill Boullianne goes with Nick Hannemann for Delray. Clark will be playing his usual left-side while Metzger makes the shift to right-side in this exciting new partnership.
After Brent Frohoff/Adam Jewell’s upset of Johnson/Kiraly, they were eliminated from the tournament by Holdren/Roger and then Boss/Metzger. Frohoff/Jewell took 9th.
Sinjin Smith/Sean Scott were eliminated by Boullianne/Clark and then Bryan Ivie/Collin Smith, who finished 7th. Sinjin Smith/Sean Scott ended up with a 9th.
Canyon Ceman/Brian Lewis were eliminated by Boullianne/Clark and then Swatik/Whitmarsh and took 9th place.
Brent Doble/Lee LeGrande uno-dosed. First Holdren/Rogers beat them 15-9 in an 80 minute long game and then Johnson/Kiraly defeated them 15-9. Doble/LeGrande took 13th.
Additional match notes (women):
First seeded Liz Masakayan/Elaine Youngs finished 7th. They were first upset in their second round 15-6 game by ninth seeded Karrie Poppinga/Angela Rock and then eliminated from the tournament by Linda Hanley/Nancy Reno in a 15-7 game.
Karrie Poppinga/Angela Rock had a great tournament and finished 4th. There was potential for higher but Rock’s knee problem prevented further advancement.
Linda Hanley/Nancy Reno finished 5th. They lost to May/McPeak and Davis/Johnson Jordan.
Danalee Bragado/Ali Wood also finished 5th. They lost to Hanley/Reno and Poppinga/Rock.
Carrie Busch/Leanne Schuster finished 7th after losing to Davis/Johnson Jordan and then Danalee Bragado/Ali Wood.
Tenth seeded Marsha Miller/Jen Pavley finished 9th after narrowly missing a shot at 5th when they lost 14-16 to Danalee Bragado/Ali Wood, who went on to place 5th.
The Olympic Spirit Of Competition
It is important to remember the Athlete Creed when participating in any Special Olympics Event and the same applies to any athletic competition.
"Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."
The original Olympic medals were silver and only awarded to the winner of an event. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided in 1907 to award medals to the first three places in all events.
Congratulations to Dax Holdren and Todd Rodgers for winning the gold medal at this weekend's Oldsmobile Alero Beach Volleyball Olympic Challenge Series.
Congratulations to Ian Clark and Bill Boullianne for winning the silver medal to add to their Gold medal at last years Acapulco,Mexico Open event.Way to go guys!!! :>)
Congratulations to Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana for winning the bronze medal.
My point here is a simple one.The U.S.A. will be well represented by whomever of these great athletes go on to the 2000 Olympiad in Sydney, Australia later this year.We are proud of them all equally and look forward to supporting each and every one of them in their quest to represent their country.
Sincerely, Unca Nick

Zé Marco and Ricardo on the Road to Sydney
Zé Marco and Ricardo took their chance. While the number one Brazilian team Emanuel/Loiola was absent, they scored another two straight wins here in Macau. With their fifth Open title in the Olympic Qualification they made a big step on the way to the Sydney Olympic Games 2000.
As only two teams per country are allowed to take part the Brazilians have the toughest of all qualifications. It looks as if both Brazilian Olympic teams will have all their eight finishes in the World Tour that count to the Olympic Ranking being tournament titles. Emanuel and Loiola did already so and with last year's World Championship, that counts with double points, nobody can overtake them. Para and Ghuilherme missed to be better than senvth in this week's Macau Open, not enough to threaten their countryfellows anymore.
The future will belong to another Brazilian team: Marcio and Benjamin. After winning in San Paulo they again went through Qualifying and Main Draw to the final. This time stopped by Zé Marco/Ricardo and a small knee injury of Benjamin at the beginning of the second set of the final match. After 65 min. playing time and a result of 4-12 and 5-12 they had to admit that today the experienced number one seeded team was simply better.
The best match of the day was the bronze medal match between Kjemperud/Hoidalen (NOR) and Franco/Roberto (BRA). Thrilling from the beginning with amazing rallies it did not deserve a loser. But Franco/Roberto scored the points and had a 14-9 lead in the midle of the game. The Norwegian Vikings did not give up. Both of them Vegard and Jorre served aces as if there was nothing easier than that. When they had 13 points collected they missed to set the equalizer and an easy long line shot of Vegard Hoidalen that landed some centimeters on the wrong side of the line ended the match all of a sudden.
For Franco/Roberto it was the first podium in 2000 and they will be one of the first picks for the title in next week's World Tour Event in Rosarito, Mexico.

Holdren & Rogers Net Mexico Open Beach Gold In All-USA Men's Finale
Rosarito, Mexico - For the third-time since 1996, a qualifying team for a men's FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Main Draw has claimed a Gold Medal as Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers of the United States completed a "perfect" weekend by capturing the Mexico Open on Rosarito Beach. Seeded 32nd in the Mexico Main Draw, Holdren and Rogers won 11-straight matches with a 15-12 win over seventh-seeded Rob Heidger and Kevin Wong in the first All-USA Gold Medal match on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour since the 1996 when the Americans captured the top two medals in the Atlanta Olympic Games. Holdren and Rogers, who had to win five-straight Qualification Tournament matches Wednesday and Thursday, shared the $26,000 first-place prize in winning their first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event. Heidger and Wong split $18,000 for their best international finish in two seasons together. The 34th-seeded team in the qualifer, Holdren and Rogers earned the United States' first spot in the Gold Medal match by out-lasting third-seeded Martin and Paul Laciga of Switzerland 15-13 in Sunday's opening semi-final match that lasted 70 minutes. Heidger and Wong ensured the All-USA Gold Medal match when they upset second-seeded Marcio Araujo and Benjamin Insfran of Brazil for the second-time in the Mexico Open with a 15-11 victory in a 50-minute semi-final match Sunday afternoon. Heidger and Wong, who finished seventh in last week's Macau Open, entered the title match as the United States was guaranteed its second-straight Mexico Open title. Bill Boullianne and Ian Clark , who were eliminated in the 2000 Mexico Open qualifer after dropping a match to Holdren/Rogers and Brent Doble/Karch Kiraly of the United States, won last year's event in Acapulco where they upset Para Ferreira and Guilherme Marques of Brazil in the Gold Medal Match. Heidger and Wong's semi-final win also snapped a string of 32-straight FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour events where Brazil had advanced at least one team to the international Gold Medal match. Sunday's title match is the ninth All-USA finale, but the first since 1996 when Kiraly and Kent Steffes earned the Atlanta Gold Medal by defeating Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh in the finale (44 events ago). Marcio Araujo and Benjamin captured the $14,000 third-place prize by winning the Bronze Medal match 16-14 over the Laciga brothers. The two teams met in the finale of January's Brazilian Open with Marcio Araujo and Benjamin capturing the Gold Medal with a 12-5 and 12-6 win. The Laciga's shared $10,000 for fourth-place. The Mexico Open is the first combined men's and women's event on the 2000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede of Brazil won the women's Mexico Open title for the second-straight year by defeating Misty May and Holly McPeak of the United States 15-12 in their title match Sunday. The men's FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour takes next weekend off before resuming play June 14-18 in Toronto, Canada. The event is the second of three combined men's and women's stops in North America. The third men's and women's event will be played in Chicago, Ill., June 28-July 4 for the season's richest purse ($400,000).

Brazil's Emanuel & Loiola Net Gold After Amazing Comeback; Canada's Child & Heese Capture Nokia Open 2000 Men's Silver Medal
Toronto, Ontario - Fifth-seeded Emanuel Rego Scheffer and Jose Loiola of Brazil staged one of the most amazing comebacks in the history of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour here Sunday (June 18) to capture the 2000 Nokia Open men's Gold Medal at Woodbine Beach Park on Ashbridges Bay. After finishing second in the previous two Nokia Opens, Emanuel and Loiola rallied from 9-0, 10-5 and 14-8 deficits to score a 16-14 win in 63-minutes over ninth-seeded John Child and Mark Heese of Canada in the men's finale. Sunday's Gold Medal finish snapped a streak of five FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour events where Emanuel and Loiola had not finished first, including a career-worst placement of 13th in the last men's international event in Mexico earlier this month. Prior to the five-event non-title streaks, Emanuel and Loiola set a record by winning six-straight international events. The record string included the 1999 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour title last July in Marseille, France. Sunday's win was worth $26,000 (US) for Emanuel and Loiola while Child and Heese split $18,000 (US). Emanuel and Loiola entered this weekend's event as the No. 1-ranked team on the FIVB Olympic Qualification Ranking list after winning seven Gold Medals in 1999. The Brazilians advanced to the $300,000 (US) Nokia Open 2000 Gold Medal match with a 15-10 win over sixth-seeded Julien Prosser and Lee Zahner of Australia in 53 minutes. Child and Heese were playing in their first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Gold Medal match since the 1998 event in Turkey when they lost to Emanuel and Loiola in the finals. The Canadians advanced to Sunday's final by upsetting second-seeded Ze'Marco deMelo and Ricardo Santos of Brazil 15-13 in 53 minutes. Ze'Marco and Ricardo had won three Golds and a Silver Medal in their last six international starts to earn the world's top ranking over a 365-day period. Child and Heese scored their first win in four meetings against Ze'Marco and Ricardo, who won last June's Nokia Open for their first of four FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Gold Medals in 1999. Emanuel and Loiola have now won 10 of 11 matches against Child and Heese, including a 15-11 win Saturday. Australia captured both the men's and women's Bronze Medal in the Nokia Open 2000. Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst scored the last three points of the women's third-place match to defeat Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan of the United States 15-12. In the men's Bronze match, Prosser and Zahner rallied from 5-0, 8-2, 11-4, 13-7 and 14-11 deficits to defeat Ze'Marco and Ricardo in 17-16 in 52 minutes. The win was Prosser and Zahner's first over Ze'Marco and Ricardo in six meetings as the Brazilians defeated their Australian rivals 15-11 here Saturday. Both Aussie teams split the $14,000 purse for third-place while the Bronze Medal losers shared $10,000 each. The Nokia Open 2000 was the fifth men's event on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour this season. Spain hosts the next men's FIVB event in the Canary Islands starting Wednesday (June 21) with a two-day Qualification Tournament. The three-day Main Draw opens Friday. The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour returns to North America when Chicago hosts the third of five combined events for men and women. The men's event opens June 28 and concludes with the medal matches July 2. The women compete on Chicago's Montrose Beach June 30-July 4.

Brazil's Emanuel & Loiola Capture 2000 Oldsmobile Chicago Grand Slam Gold Medal
CHICAGO, ILL. - The top two teams in the beach volleyball world battled here Sunday (July 2) for the men's Gold Medal in the $400,000 Oldsmobile Chicago Grand Slam with Emanuel Rego and Jose Loiola defeating Ze'Marco deMelo and Ricardo Santos 16-14 in an All-Brazilian finale at Montrose Beach on Lake Michigan. Emanuel and Loiola, who were seeded fourth in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event, shared $32,000 for the 54-minute win that marked their sixth-straight win of the Montrose Beach competition and their 12th-straight victory on the international circuit. Sunday's win was Emanuel and Loiola's second title on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour this season as the pair won their last international stop in Canada where they posted a 6-0 record match to capture the Toronto Gold Medal. Emanuel and Loiola, winners of 14 of 20 career matches against Ze'Marco and Ricardo, have now won 13 FIVB titles since forming their partnership at the start of the 1998 season. Sunday's title match was also the sixth-time the two Brazilian teams have met in a FIVB final with each team winning three times. The second-seeded Ze'Marco and Ricardo, who clinched an 2000 Sydney Olympic Games berth with their Oldsmobile finish this weekend, shared $22,000 for the Silver Medal finish. Fourteenth-seeded Jose Salema and Mariano Baracetti, who won the 2000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour season opener in January at Mar del Plata, Argentina, dropped a 15-6 decision to Emanuel and Loiola in Sunday's first semi-final match. Ze'Marco and Ricardo scored a 15-0 win over sixth-seeded Martin Laciga and Paul Laciga in the second semi-final match. The Laciga brothers won last week's FIVB event in the Canary Islands. In the men's Bronze Medal match, the Laciga brothers snared the $17,000 third-place prize by defeating Salema and Baracetti 16-14 in 68 minutes. The Argentina pair rallied from a 12-7 deficit to take a 14-13 lead. Salema dislocated his right shoulder on a service attempt and the Swiss came back to score the final three points of the match. Salema, who will miss next week's event in Norway, and Baracetti split $13,000 for the fourth-place finish. The 2000 Oldsmobile Chicago Grand Slam also features women's competition with another set of medal matches set for Tuesday at Montrose Beach. The United States advanced four unbeaten teams to Monday's competition that starts at 9 a.m. (CDT).

Veteran Challenge for Brazilian trio Stavanger, Norway (July 8, 2000) - In a dramatic battle with fellow veteran and legend Sinjin Smith (43), it was Esteban Martinez (38) who secured a semifinal spot representing the only non-Brazilian team. For Martinez and his teammate Martin Conde, this is the first semifinal this season. The Argentinians have played impressively all through the competition, losing narrowly 14-16 to first-seeds Ze Marco/Ricardo in the quarterfinals in the winners bracket. But no one gave the Argentinians a harder fight than Sinjin Smith and Carl Henkel. The Americans made their best result since 1997, and had the semifinal almost in their pockets. Smith/Henkel were up 8-1, and even at 10-7 seemed in control. In the end, the strain of going all through the losers bracket showed on the Americans, giving in 15-11. Martinez even had to overcome a groin injury in the middle of the match, but fought it out heroically for a semifinal against the favorites Marcio Araujo/Benjamin. These brilliant newcomers still have to go through the qualification, but played exellent for an unbeaten 4-0 record. In the other semifinal Ze Marco/Ricardo meet with Emanuel/Loiola, who won a tough fight against Maia/Brenha 15-12. The weather in Stavanger stayed sunny all day, and the courts were filled with thousands of enthusiastic spectators, dispite the disappointing 9.th place for home favorites Kjemperud/Høidalen.
Ze Marco/Ricardo - Simply the best They are the top seed in the world, and they showed why. Ze Marco/Ricardo from Brazil played trough the Phillips Open 2000 in Stavanger without a loss. The youngsters and silver medallists Marcio Araujo/Benjamin warn: - When we can skip the Qualification Tournament, we'll be even closer! Our serves and blocks were the main difference today, Ze Marco said after beating Marcio Araujo/Benjamin 15-11 in the final. This was Ze Marco/Ricardos eight victory together, their second this year, and they strengthend their position on the top of the world ranking. The 62nd and last match in Stavanger 2000 ended in 46 minutes, and 3500 spectators were given beach volleyball on the highest level - with serve aces, blocks, lineshots in a row. 2.02 high Ricardo seemed even higher this afternoon, especially for Marcio Araujo/Ricardo. - Yes, he is high. Very high, and very good, Benjamin admitted. Already before the semifinals it was clear that the Brazilians would dominate and participate on both sides of the final-net. Martinez/Conde, that played Marcio Araujo/Benjamin in the second semifinal, was in practice without chance to win. Martinez should probably not played at all. His muscle injury from Saturday wasn't repaired, and the Brazilians won easily 15-3. Which gave them an easier way to the final than their opponents Ze Marco/Ricardo; they used 43 minutes to win 15-12 against Emanuel/Loiola. Yes, we problably are the to best teams in the world right now. The results don't lie, Ze Marco said. Happy for the victory, happy for the tournament, happy for the Norwegian spectators with Brazilian flags (- It would never happened in Brazil!) and happy for the Brazilian dominance. If he feels sorry for beating other Brazilians? - Not at all. To win we have to beat a lot of them! No bronze final was ever played. Martinez/Conde had to forfeit, no other possibility. But Martinez thinks they'll be back in Italy next week. - I'm not worried, neither for rest of the World Tour nor for the Olympic Games, Martinez said. Like last year in Stavanger, three Brazilian teams stood on the podium. This tournament also showed other teams on their way to Sydney. Like already mentioned Martinez/Conde, like the Portugese Maia/Brenha and like the Germans Oetke/Scheuerpflug. In Australia Marcio Araujo/Benjamin will not join them. There's only two Brazilian places, and they're already occupied. It's a bit unfair. The rules keep us out of the Olympic tournament. And Ze Marco/Ricardo and Emanuel/Loiola deserves to play in Sydney, Marco Araujo said.

Johnson-Kiraly USA Withdraw Posted by: Newspress.com on 07/10/00 05:16:57 PDT Kiraly, whose victory in last year's inaugural Kiraly Classic was his last one on the tour, suffered a groin injury during a match on Saturday. He tried to play Sunday but the pain was too intense, and he was forced to withdraw from his own tourney. "I strained something in my groin or low abdomen on Saturday," said Kiraly, 39, who starred at Santa Barbara High and UCLA. "I tried to play through it but I wasn't jumping or running well today."I didn't want to risk further injury because there's a lot of important events coming up." Kiraly-Johnson cancelled their plans to go to Italy this week to compete in an FIVB Olympic qualifying tournament. After getting therapy, Kiraly hopes to play at the FIVB stop in France in two weeks.

Last year was a big year for Marseille, which celebrated its 26th centenary and hosted the 1999 Beach Volleyball World Championships. But, rather than concentrate on its past, the city ( with a population of 857,000, one million if you count the whole metropolitan area ) is looking ahead to the future. Marseille is a city of people who work, create, make money, and merit consideration thanks to its critical geographic location on the Mediterranean and its very active cultural life. What to see. take a look in particular at the many architectural landmarks, the picturesque Estaque neighborhood, and the old port nearby, full of restaurants and bars. Plage du Prado will be the area where it is set up an artificial beach with a stadium for 5000 speactators,6 courts and a village of 4,000 m sq. including a swimming pool ,boutiques a restaurant and a VIP tribune. Jordan/Davis (USA) and Ze Marco/Ricaro (BRA) winners It was really windy to day in Marseille for the FIVB France Open finals. The stadium was full and the spectators delighted to see the best players of the world. Many Brazilians who leave in Marseille were here to support Shelda/Behar (BRA)and Ze Marco/Rirardo (BRA). In spite of this help, the world's number one team of Behar and Shelda have been defeated by the third seeded American team of Jordan and Davis.Just as yesterday, Davis has been really strong on serve. At the beginning, the American team has been leading (10/05) but Behar and Shelda scored important points. At the end, Davis/Jordan (USA) were too strong and won (15/11). The third place match, was won (15/10) by the Brazilians Monica and Ana Paola, at the expense of the Australians Pottharst and Cook. The men's final has been won by the Brazlians Ze Marco/Ricardo, they defeated Kjemperu/Holdalen (NOR) (15/13). Both teams have played a beautiful match but the Brazilian's made the difference in the last points. Emanuel/Loiola (BRA) finished third without playing against Palinek/Lebl (CZE) because of Palinek's injury.

Rob Heidger/Kevin Wong qualify for Sydney Adam Johnson/Karch Kiraly finish fifth and return to 2nd seed
KLAGENFURT,AUT.- Terrific matches of the World Champions Zé Marco de Melo/Ricardo Santos and 2nd seeded Emanuel Rego/Jose Loiola against Olympic Winner Karch Kiraly/ Adam Johnson. Adam Johnson/Karch Kiraly surpass Dain Blanton/Eric Fonoimoana for the second seeded US-team. Rob Heidger and Kevin Wong stay USA no. 1 and secure their Olympic participation. Paulao/Bellaguarda of Brazil defeat their compatriots and World Ranking no. 1 Zé Marco de Melo/Ricardo Santos. The German team Oliver Oetke/Andreas Scheuerpflug qualify for a berth in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. A total of 7000 spectators motivated the players on a grey and rainy day. Presently the US-Olympic Qualification Rankings are lead by Rob Heidger/Kevin Wong with 1898 points. While not happy with a 17th place finish, it was enough to guarantee Heidger/Wong a spot on the U.S. Beach Volleyball Olympic Team. "We're happy to have qualified for the Olympics here in Klagenfurt. I love the sorroundings, because they remind me of my home in Hawaii. There is still a lot of hard work ahead of us to bring home a medal from Sydney," said Wong. Olympic Winner Karch Kiraly's (USA) and Adam Johnson's matches today were absolutely thrilling against the number one seed Zé Marco de Melo/Ricardo Santos (BRA) and 2nd seeded Emanuel Rego/Jose Loiola (BRA) with a 15-8 (15 matchpoints) win by the World Champions and a close 16-14 victory by the 2nd seeded Brazilians in 1h20'. Karch Kiraly/Adam Johnson finished fifth in Klagenfurt and surpassed their compatriots Dain Blanton/Eric Fonoimoana of the United States with 86 Olympic Qualification points on the way to qualifying for the 2000 Olympics. Blanton/Fonoimoana now need to go to the final four in next week's Belgium Open as long as Kirraly/Johnson not finish better than 9th to change it again. The Brazil surprise was the 16-17 defeat of the top-seeded Zé Marco de Melo/Ricardo Santos against Paulao/Bellaguarda who worked their way up from the qualifying rounds. The German tandem Oliver Oetke/Andreas Scheuerpflug qualified for a berth in the 2000 Olympic Games by winning against Dain Blanton/Eric Fonoimoana of the United States with 15-11 in 50'.
Emanuel/Loyola win for the 3rd time in Klagenfurt
KLAGENFURT,AUT.- The sun is back again and so are the Brazilians. Sensational Brazilian final of World Champions Emanuel Rego/Jose Loiola against top seeded Zé Marco de Melo/Ricardo Santos. Paulao/Bellaguarda finished third. The Norway tandem Hoidalen/Kjemperud finishes fourth. In total 13.000 spectators created a terrfic atmosphere in the stadium of Klagenfurt. "Winning in Klagenfurt is really great, it is one of the best tournaments on the tour. The final was very good, but I prefered the play against the Americans. The spectators in the stadion are very involved and motivated our play," said Loyola about his victory at the Pringles Open FIVB-Beach Volleyball World Tour, the third time that the Brazilian tandem won in Klagenfurt. It was a case of the two top seeded Brazilian teams meeting for the final. On the one side Ricardo did a perfect job with blocks and rallied from a 12-5 deficit to take a 13-12 lead over Emanuel and Loyola. On the other side Emanuel was decisive for the finish by getting two fatal shots on Zé Marco and making the last two points (15-13, two match points). Paulao/Bellaguarda of Brazil who worked their way up from the qualifying rounds and always like to joke with the crowds in the stands finished third against the Norvegian team Hoidalen/Kjemperud. The spectators in the stands pumped the Norvegians up, but Hoidalen had problems with the serve. They were exhausted after coming through the loser's bracket. Leading briefly the Scandinavian lost with 6-15 in 1 h.

1st) Emanuel-Loiola BRA (Brazil) first at Men's FIVB Beach Volleyball Ostend,Belgium Open
Three Time Olympic Gold Medallist Karch Kiraly Out With Injury!!! 09-Aug-2000 First day of the FIVB World Tour Men's Open, in Ostend, Belgium, with 39 competing teams, representing 20 different countries. Plenty of white sand on the beach in front of the Thermae Palace hotel and even the weather was nice. The teams will fight hard, for some, it is their last chance to ensure their participation in the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games, which will take place on the famous Bondi Beach in Sydney, allow two teams per country only to defend their national flag. There will be 24 teams fighting for the Olympic Gold Medal: Excitement guaranteed! What the fresh Belgian Champions (Embrechts - Melis) is concerned, they had the honor to compete against the mythic duo Kiraly-Johnson. The game started off on an equal footing till they reached 5-5, but then the level of the Americans of the international tournament circuit peaked and they finished after a 36 minute fight with a 15-7 score. Playing the match ball of the second win of his team, Kiraly unfortunately dislocated his shoulder, putting an end to his and his partner's participation in the tournament. This misfortune does give the American team Blanton-Fonoimoana the possibility to win a spot in the Olympic Games in Sydney. The unbeaten teams of the Ostend tournament so far are: Alvarez-Russel (Cuba), Berg-Dahl (Sweden), Sayfulin-Karasev (Rusland), Kiraly-Johnson (USA), Grinlaub-Slack (Australia), Velasco-De Jesus (Puerto Rico), Schacht-Anfilloff (Australia). They will face each other tomorrow, and the winning teams will automatically be qualified for the Main Draw. Apart from the two directly placed Belgian teams (Delanghe-Delfosse and Kempenaers-Joosen), the only Belgian team still having a chance to qualify for the Main Draw is the team Embrechts-Melis, who did win their second game 15-3 against Huseby-Kobbevik (Norway)
Karch injured again,Fonoimoana/Blanton have a chance to qualify for Sydney!!! Courtesy of Gene Mick Volleyball Magazine Forums 08/10/2000 Part I Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson won their second game of the Qualifier Tournament today (Wednesday) of the Belgium FIVB Open, but they will be unable to continue play tomorrow because Karch dislocated his right shoulder on the final point of the second game. Here is what Karch had to say by e-mail: "On the last play of the second game I dug a ball, Adam set me on the right side, and I cranked it down so we won. But just as I made contact with the ball (or right after) my right shoulder came out of the socket. I dislocated it with my spike motion. And let me tell you, that is one painful injury, I was really hurting until they were able to put it back in five or 10 minutes later. We're out of the tourney now. The X-rays came out fine, but I'll be out of action for a while, maybe through for this calendar year. The worst part is that I'm typing this (e-mail) left-handed right now, on a keyboard with all the letters out of place. I'll be fine though, and we cut our trip short so we'll be home later tomorrow. My left hand is out of gas, so take care." Since Karch and AJ now have no further chance of improving their Olympic Qualifying Ranking (OQR) points before the August 15, 2000 deadline, Eric Fonoimoana and Dain Blanton can move ahead of them in OQR points by finishing 4th or better in the Belgium FIVB Open. Fonoi and Blanton begin Main Draw play on Friday. If Fonoi and Blanton advance all the way to the semi-finals, they will earn the second berth to Sydney behind Rob Heidger and Kevin Wong. Even if Fonoi and Blanton fail to advance to the semi’s, it seems (based on Karch’s e-mail note) there is a chance Karch won’t be able to compete in Sydney. Part II Who said if Karch doesn't play then AJ doesn't play? Check the FIVB web site, click on the Olympics link and look into beach volleyball qualification regulations. Hmmm...sounds like big Whitty may be a good left side choice if Eric and Dain don't place fourth or higher this weekend in Belgium. Whitty seems to meet the requirements. Maybe get Fonoi but has he won anything this year? What about Whitty's international/overall winning/playing experience compared to Eric's?Tough choice but this debate may all be for nothing if Eric/Dain do well in Belgium. What a tough break for AJ if he doesn't make it.I don't believe Whitmarsh has played 8 events so he wouldn't qualify as a replacement. From FIVB: Eventual "force majeure" cases previously assessed by the FIVB will be solved as follows: A National Olympic Committee, upon submission of a proposal by the corresponding National Federation, may register two additional players per qualified team, chosen from among the players included in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Ranking dated August 15th, 2000 who have taken part in at least eight (8) FIVB Official Olympic Qualification Tournaments. These players might, if necessary be authorised to replace the incapacitated member(s) of a duly qualified team (pair) and this up to the time of the General Preliminary Meeting to be held before the competition. I was at the Deerfield Alero, and the discussion came up about the Qualification. They said (Tim Simmons) that a team keeps it's points and an alternate is chosen if a player can't go. This will be interesting to see who can go in KK's place, that is if what I heard was right. Maybe someone who knows Simmons can email and ask him.
Kiraly injured, Sydney in doubt!!! Courtesy Of NBC Olympics.com Beach Volleyball // News // 09 Aug 2000 Three-time gold medalist and defending Olympic beach volleyball champion Karch Kiraly dislocated his shoulder Wednesday, forcing his withdrawal from the FIVB Beach Volleyball Tour’s Belgium Open and placing his hopes for a spot in the Sydney Games in serious jeopardy. Kiraly and Adam Johnson came into the Belgium tournament holding onto the second U.S. berth for the Games by a tenuous 86 points. With Kiraly's injury, Americans Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana have an opportunity to clinch the berth by finishing fourth or better this week. The Belgian Open is the final tournament for Olympic qualification purposes. The team of Kiraly/Johnson has 1,722 Olympic qualifying points, which are earned on the FIVB Tour in a two-year span leading into the Games, and Blanton/Fonoimoana has 1,636. The team of Rob Heidger/Kevin Wong has already clinched the other U.S. berth. "On the last play of the second game, I dug a ball Adam set me on the right side, and I cranked it down, so we won," Kiraly told NBCOlympics.com. "But just as I made contact with the ball, my right shoulder came out of the socket. I dislocated it with my spike motion." Kiraly and Johnson, who were coming off a fifth-place finish last week in Austria, got a first-round bye Wednesday before defeating Belgium’s Koene Embrechts and Dieter Melis, 15-7, and Switzerland’s Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel, 15-9. If Kiraly is out for the year and Blanton and Fonoimoana don’t move into the second U.S. spot this weekend, Johnson would qualify for Sydney and be forced to pick up a new partner. As of Wednesday evening, Kiraly wasn’t sure he would be back in time for Sydney. "We're out of the tourney (Belgium Open) now," he said. "The X-rays came out fine, but I'll be out of action for a while, maybe through for this calendar year."
Ze Marco and Ricardo Out in Ostend A shower of high level matches and unexpected results on this first day of the main draw of the 6th edition of the FIVB World Tour in Ostend, Belgium. The first surprise of the day was the defeat of the Brazilian team Ze Marco-Ricardo who were the number one seed in Ostend. The Swedish team Berg-Dahl beat them 15-12 in 45 minutes. The spectators, who showed up in large numbers to assist the battle of the giants of the beach, barely had the time to recover from this feat when they could witness the Brazilians Marcio Araujo-Benjamin going on their knees before the Australian team Grinlaubs-Slack with a 13-15 score in 55 minutes. Just as spectacular was the Cuban victory over the American Wong-Heidger, Alvarez-Rosell won 16-14 in 58 minutes and the remarkable performance by Holden-Leinemann, defeating the Argentinean team Martinez-Conde by 17-15. The Latin Americans recovered very quickly and amazed the audience by sending Ze Marco-Ricardo home to Brazil from the last tournament before the Olympics (result: 15-9). The still unbeaten teams after this first day of the main draw are: Berg-Dahl (SWE), Child-Heese (CAN), Kjemperud-Hoidalen (NOR), Laciga P. -Laciga M. (SUI), Grinlaubs-Slack (AUS), Sinjin Smith-Henkel (USA), Blanton-Fonoimoana (USA), Emanuel-Loiola (BRA).
Blanton-Fonoimoana Off To Sydney Continuing their winning streak, Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana have not only secured themselves a spot in the semi-finals through the winning bracket, but more importantly, they are finally sure of their participation in the Olympics in Sydney. Nevertheless, they had to fight for their victories, the first day against Stamm-Berger and Raffaeil-Pimponi. This morning, they scalped the Brazilian World Champions Emanuel-Loiola, and in the afternoon they won against Smith-Henkel with merit, after having trailed behind 0-5 against their compatriots. When the scoreboard showed 10-10, Blanton and Fomoimoana did not hesitate, they took a short cut to victory. After one month of suspense, they could finally celebrate their qualification. "Belgium brings us luck" says Dain Blanton, "This wasn't the case for Karch Kiraly who had to give up here in Ostend. What a relief to be able finish a difficult season with the Olympic Games! All year long, we have had a hard time to go from the American tour to the FIVB World Tour." The Norwegian team Kjemprud-Hoidalen has also found their way to the semi-finals, thanks to their wins against the brothers Laciga, even though the Swiss, ranked third, had had the chance to finish off the game. The other victims of the Norwegian duo were Child and Heese (CAN), who were beaten in 37 minutes with a score of 15-9. The surprise of the day was Sinjin Smith and Carl Henkel getting into the semi-finals, for the first time this year. Smith, 43, also called the King of the Beach, used all his experience to beat the Swiss Laciga brothers 17-15. The Brazilian team Loiola-Emanuel fill the last spot in the semi-finals, defeating the Canadians John Child and Mark Heese 15-10.Tomorrow's schedule: semi-finals 10:00 am, final for the 3rd and 4th place 1:30 pm, grand final: 2:30 pm.
Emanuel-Loiola Win The Belgian Men's Open FIVB World Tour Again For the second year in a row, Fernando Emanuel and Jose Loiola put the central court of the Ostend Beach on fire. On the tones of the samba, the Brazilians, based in California, dominated the final match of this tournament against Carl Henkel and Sinjin Smith. Trailing behind 5-0 from very early on, the Americans never managed to turn the score to their advantage. Henkel just couldn't block the attacks from the Brazilians. Without their preferred weapon and serving badly, the American duo had to give up the game to the opponents 15-8. The Belgian Men's Open in Ostend, was the last official FIVB World Tour tournament taken into account for the Olympic Games in Sydney: all 24 participating teams are now known. The total prize money for this tournament was US$150,000, US$26,000 will be going to Emanuel-Loiola. The Norwegian team Kjemperud-Hoidalen lacked strength and offered Sinjin Smith-Henkel a place in the final game of the tournament. Apparently they underestimated the thorough technical experience of their adversaries and they were dryly defeated 15-5 by the Beach gurus. For Christopher Saint John ("Sinjin") Smith, his participation in the final match of the day, means that he is the first player of his age (43yrs) to play a final of a World Tour tournament, yet another record on his name. For Blanton-Fonoimoana, the scar of their loss (15-5) against Emmanuel-Loiola in the semi-final will be covered by their assured spot in the Olympic Games instead of their compatriots Karch Kiraly (abandoned with a dislocated shoulder) and Adam Johnson. Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana opened the game with a hesitating start, giving the Brazilians the chance to open up a difference of 8 points, which the Californian team never managed to catch up. Blanton-Fonoimoana came back during the final of the loser bracket and took the third place of the tournament before the Norwegian Kjemperud-Hoidalen.
