Ian Clark Stein Metzger
IMAN/Stein in action today! This is how they did:
1st round: 6. Metzger / Clark def. 27. Matthews / Kruger (was a tough match in the beginning) 2nd round: Metzger / Clark def. N. Hannemann / Boullianne (another tough match-up) 3rd round: LeGrande / Doble def. Metzger / Clark (this was a very vocal match between the two teams. they were some calls that didn't go the way of Ian/Stein, thus making it hard to watch this match.) I was very impressed with how hard Ian/Stein played and I hope they'll be playing for as long as they can as a tandem since they mesh very well together.Ian/Stein played well throughout, including winning: their 1st match which was against a team I have never seen before. They had Ian/Stein on the ropes in the 1st half and then Ian/Stein stepped it up to win! In the 2nd round, Ian/Stein beat Beef/Nick Hannemann. Then, Ian's and Stein's last match was against Lee/Brent. Ian/Stein won the 1st outta 3 games with a lot of hard work. But, then they lost the 2nd and eventually the third. The ref in this match made a lot of poor judgement calls throughout the contest. With 2 wins and 1 loss in the qualifier Ian/Stein place 9th.
9th - Ian Clark/Stein Metzger $ 2,000

Kiraly and Johnson headline season opener By SHARON ROBB Courtesy of Sun Sentinel DELRAY BEACH -- Some of the world's best men's players from the Association of Volleyball Professionals will compete in the tour's season opener today through Sunday at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. Eight teams, including top-ranked and U.S. Olympic hopefuls Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson, will compete in the Sunkist AVP Tournament of Champions. Despite being two blocks away from the beach, 250 tons of sand was brought in to cover center court at the tennis center for a makeshift volleyball court. The event has been coupled with the Delray Beach Affair. The tandems of Dax Holdren-Todd Rogers, Jose Loiola-Emanuel Rego, Brent Doble-Lee LeGrande and Mark Kerins-Kevin Martin earned the final four berths in the AVP event. The four qualifiers won a pair of matches April 22 on Sorrento Beach in Santa Monica, Calif., to advance to the final three rounds of the 56-team, single-elimination event that features $75,000. Earning automatic tournament berths were the Kiraly-Johnson, Dain Blanton-Eric Fonoimoana, David Swatik-Mike Whitmarsh and Canyon Ceman-Brian Lewis teams. The automatic berths were based on the players' points from the 1999 AVP season. Holdren and Rogers will be trying for their second-straight Florida title after capturing the Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball Olympic Challenge Series event, April 16 in Deerfield Beach, where the pair captured their third pro beach title by defeating Bill Boullianne and Ian Clark 15-8 in the final. Blanton and Fonoimoana placed third in the Oldsmobile event after losing 15-7 in the semifinals. Swatik and Whitmarsh finished fifth after dropping a 15-9 elimination match to Holdren and Rogers. Johnson and Kiraly, the top-seeded team in the Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball event, placed seventh in Deerfield Beach with Ceman and Lewis ninth. Doble and LeGrande were 13th in the Olds tournament while Kerins and Martin did not participate in the USA Volleyball-sanctioned event. Brazilians Loiola and Rego, the No. 1-ranked team on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, will be participating in their first U.S. event this season. The pair are the 1999 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Champions, claiming the title last July in Marseille, France. They placed ninth and third in the first two FIVB beach event this season in Argentina and Brazil, respectively. On Saturday, Fonoimoana, who has started a Digs For Kids charity event, will hold a question and answer session with youth at 10 a.m. followed by the Sunkist Youth Clinic at 11 a.m. First Round Results: courtesy of the AVPTOUR.com web site:
Friday, April 28, 2000, Delray Beach, Florida:
The AVP’s 2000 season kicked off tonight at the Sunkist Tournament of Champions at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. Taking the court to get things started was Lee LeGrand and Brent Doble the tournaments #7 seed vs. the #2 seeded team of Eric Fonoimoana and Dain Blanton. The action heated quickly with Fonoi and Dain dominating play in the first game of the best of three series, with an 11-4 win. Fonoi had 9 kills in 10 attempts with 2 blocks and 3 digs with Blanton’s line reading 7 kills in 11 attempts, with 1 block, 1 ace, and 4 digs.
Game two was a different story. LeGrande was heating things up with his in-your-face style, hammering balls high and hard for 24 kills in 28 attempts. Lee and Brent charted 12 digs in the second game, propelling them to an 11-8 victory.
The third and deciding game is played to 6 points. Doble/LeGrande seemed to carry all the momentum into the third and quickly established a 4-1 lead. Fonoi and Dain seemed out of rhythm, with Eric making some uncharacteristic unforced hitting errors, converting on only 5 of 10 hitting attempts. The lead was too much to overcome as Doble/LeGrande pushed through for a 6-2 victory, upsetting the tournaments #2 seeds.
Match #2 featuring the events top seeded team of Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson vs. eighth seed Mark Kerins and Kevin Martin is under way.
Kerins/Martin def. Karch/AJ 2-1 !!!!!!!!
Match #2 featuring the events top seeded team of Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson vs. eighth seed Mark Kerins and Kevin Martin, began just after 7:00pm est. under the lights of the Delray Tennis Center. The night match proved to be great theatre. In game 1, Karch and AJ stormed out to 10-6 lead, game point in hand with every serve of the ball. Martin/Kerins would show their metal by siding out time after time, while climbing back to knot the score at 10-10. As improbable as it seemed, Karch and AJ would let game 1 slip away, as Martin/Kerins prevailed with a stunning 12-10 comeback.
Game two, saw Kiraly/Johnson get out to another big lead behind AJ’s three aces and seven digs. They would not allow Kerins/Martin to get back into this one as they cruised to an 11-3 victory.
Coming off a solid performance in game two, the crowd was anticipating the top seeds closing out the tie-breaking game to 6. But it was the upset minded Kerins/Martin who dominated play as Kerins logged both a block and an ace, with partner Martin siding out at will. At 4-1, Kerins/Martin had two great point scoring chances slip away, but Kiraly/Johnson could not mount any momentum and at 5-1, the smallest player on the court, Martin, ended the game by stuffing AJ.
The 2000 season is underway. Two matches, two huge upsets. Kiraly/Johnson and Fonoimoana/Blanton both out of the running for the first title of 2000. Both will play on Sunday in our consolation playoff games. These games will be seven point shootouts to establish 5th through 7th place. The tournament is wide open with all remaining teams taking the court on Saturday. Stay tuned for results!
Kiraly-Johnson eliminated By SHARON ROBB Courtesy of Sun Sentinel DELRAY BEACH -- The top two seeded teams were defeated Friday night in the opening of the $75,000 Sunkist AVP Tournament of Champions at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. Mark Kerins and Kevin Martin upset top-seeded Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson 12-10, 3-11, 6-1 in the final night match before a crowd of 300. In the opening match, Lee LeGrande and Brent Doble defeated No. 2 seeds Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana 4-11, 11-9, 6-2. LeGrande and Doble, seeded seventh, and Kerins and Martin, seeded eighth, were two of the four qualifying teams for the 56-team, single-elimination men's tour season-opener. It's the second time in three weeks Kiraly and Johnson, top U.S. Olympic hopefuls, have been ousted from a tournament early. Blanton and Fonoimoana placed third in the Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball Olympic Challenge Series two weeks ago in Deerfield Beach. Johnson and Kiraly, the top-seeded team in the Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball event, placed seventh. Doble and LeGrande were 13th in the Olds tournament. Kerins and Martin did not participate in the USA Volleyball-sanctioned event. Brazilians Jose Loiola and Emanuel Rego, ranked No. 1 on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, play at 4:30 today in their first U.S. event of the season. Fonoimoana will hold his Dig for Kids Foundation event today at 10. The charitable organization promotes excellence in youth sports and academics. Dig for Kids has donations pledged for each "dig" that Fonoimoana gets during a volleyball tournament. Lee LeGrande and David Swatik will conduct a Sunkist AVP Youth Clinic at 11 a.m.

Quarterfinal #5 Dax Holdren / Todd Rogers vs. #4 Brian Lewis / Canyon Ceman
More quarterfinal action to report on Saturday afternoon at the Sunkist AVP Tournament of Champions. Play started at 3:00pm est, with #4 seeds Brian Lewis and Canyon Ceman taking the court against #5 seed Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers. The team of Rogers/Holdren are coming off a victory at the USAV Olympic qualifying event two weeks ago in Deerfield Florida. The pair was dominating in their performance last weekend at the AVP qualifying event in securing a berth for the Delray Beach event.
Game #1 saw Holdren/Rogers playing their usual mistake free volleyball, holding the lead the entire game in what became a marathon battle. Close to an hour into the game, Holdren/Rogers pushed the score to game point 10-8 over Ceman/Lewis. Behind Canyon’s two aces and Lewy’s 15 for 16 hitting performance, the two rallied for a hard earned 12-10 victory.
Game #2 was not the lengthy sideout battle that we saw in game #1. Lewis/Ceman generated points from all over the court as Canyon ripped 3 aces, and Lewy lipping 5 balls. Lewis/Ceman were having good success serving Todd Rogers, who could only manage an 11 for 17 hitting performance. With an 11-7 victory in game two, Lewis/Ceman have a great opportunity to make the finals as a result of the Kerins/Martin upset over Kiraly/Johnson last night. They will play the Semifinals at approx. 6:30pm est Tonight.
Quarterfinal #3 Mike Whitmarsh / David Swatik vs. #6 Emanuel Rego / Jose Loiola
The final quarterfinal match was viewed as the toughest on paper, #3 seeds Mike Whitmarsh and David Swatik vs. #6 seed Emanuel Rego and Jose Loiola. These teams have a lot of recent history between them, with Whitmarsh and Swatik beating the Brazilian Duo on two of the Tours biggest finals last year at Hermosa and Manhattan. On each those occasions the Brazilians seemed firmly in control of the match before losing a two point nail biter in each. The Brazilians viewed this match as very important to make a statement for the rest of the year, as these two teams will surely meet on a number of occasions.
Game one was all about the high flying Brazilians hitting untouchable balls from every angle. Rego went 14 for 18 attacking the ball, and his partner Loiola added 17 Kills in 26 attempts from his left side hitting position. The team accounted for 12 digs on their way to a convincing 11-7 game one win.
Game two was tight throughout, with each team steadily delivering kills. Loiola helped his team with 2 blocks and 1 ace to add to his partners 10 for 13 hitting performance. Rego, or “Bones” as he is affectionately known as here on the AVP tour is just beginning to get the recognition he deserves as one of, if not the best player in the world. In this match, Bones was crushing extreme angles over the block of Whitmarsh, which nobody can remember seeing in the past. This game was up for grabs up to the final Loiola Block that secured the 11-9 game two victory for the Brazilians and a spot in the Semifinals against LeGrande and Doble.
Semifinal #4 Canyon Ceman / Brian Lewis vs. #8 Kevin Martin / Mark Kerins
Absolute Domination! Canyon and Lewy took it to the #8 seeds in the first of two semifinal matches Saturday night. Bombs away from the service line, this was the call for Ceman/Lewis. 4 aces from Lewy’s big right arm, Canyon adding 2 more for the game. Six aces in a game to 11 is getting it done. This combined, with solid sideout numbers added up to an 11-6 game one victory.
Ceman/Lewis cranked up the point scoring machine in game two with Canyon dialing up three aces and Lewy looming large at the net for 3 blocks. On the other side of the net, Kevin Martin could not get it going as he was only able to convert 9 of 24 kill attempts. Game two went quickly with Lewis/Ceman racing to an 11-1 victory and the first spot in the finals!
Kiraly keeps going, going, going By SHARON ROBB Courtesy of Sun Sentinel DELRAY BEACH -- Karch Kiraly, the most recognizable name in beach volleyball, is still playing at 39. Considering his dad, Laszlo, plays recreational beach volleyball every day at 64, Kiraly has a few more good years in him. "I have been really lucky to get good genes from my parents," Kiraly said. "My dad [had surgery on] both of his shoulders after I had my shoulder operated on. We're all pretty resilient. I consider myself extremely blessed to be able to play a kid's game at the world's most beautiful beaches and earn a nice living for my family." Kiraly was written off in 1997 with a bad shoulder and nothing left to prove. After shoulder surgery and seven months of rehab, Kiraly said he feels good again physically. "He fought his way back," partner Adam Johnson said. "Karch Kiraly is Mr. Volleyball. There is always one or two of these guys in every sport that can have this kind of career, like Nolan Ryan in baseball. I can see Karch playing until he's 45." Kiraly is to beach volleyball what Michael Jordan was to basketball. There are plenty of players coming up behind him ready to take his place, but it's going to take a while to gain the achievements and respect he has. "I wake up every morning, get the kids off to school after breakfast and I go to work by coming down to the beach," Kiraly said. "Who wouldn't want to keep doing that if you've got the chance and if you still feel good physically and are winning a lot of tournaments? I don't know if there's ever a lot that I feel I have to prove to anybody. I just love competing." Kiraly, a former indoor champion, won his third Olympic gold medal and first in beach volleyball in 1996. He became beach volleyball's winningest player when he surpassed Sinjin Smith by winning his 140th tournament. By the end of the 1999 season, Kiraly had 141 wins, a number that could be closer to 200 had he decided to devote himself to beach volleyball earlier in his career. He is a seven-time MVP on the Association of Volleyball Players tour, including the past two seasons; has won Best Offensive Player five times; won the Manhattan Beach Open, the tour's most prestigious event, seven times; has won the King of the Beach Tournament four times; and tied the record for consecutive open wins with 13 in one season. What's left to accomplish? "Try to win more tournaments," said Kiraly, who with Johnson has been ousted early in this season's first two pro tournaments in South Florida. The duo lost two weeks ago in the Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball Challenge Series in Deerfield Beach and Friday in the Sunkist AVP Tournament of Champions, which ends today at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. The final is at 3:30 p.m. "The career-victory record was never a big focus for me," Kiraly said. "What's a big focus for me and for Adam, when we have an opportunity, is to try and notch a win. If you focus on that, over a long period of time, those wins can add up to something that I'll look back on a lot more once I am done with my career." After a long winter of missed tournaments, America's No. 3 team in Olympic qualifying points is far from out of it. Kiraly's focus is not the FIVB tour because traveling out of the country takes too much time away from his wife and family. Kiraly and Johnson can rack up the points they need on the AVP tour. "Our plans are to definitely make a run for the Olympics," Kiraly said. "With respect to this winter, Adam's injuries were legitimate, his mother was seriously ill, and besides that, we still have plenty of time to play one more FIVB event, maybe Chicago, and reach our quota for qualifying. We're not going to kill ourselves qualifying. If it happens, great. If it doesn't, I won't be crying in my milk." Until tandems Eric Fonoimoana/Dain Blanton or Sinjin Smith/Carl Henkel post some serious top-four finishes in FIVB events, Kiraly and Johnson have nothing to worry about. Results Quarterfinals: (4) Brian Lewis/Canyon Ceman d. (5) Dax Holdren/Todd Rogers, 12-10, 11-7. (6) Emanuel Rego/Jose Loiola d. (3) Mike Whitmarsh/David Swatik, 11-7, 11-9. Semifinals: Rego/Loiola vs. (7) Lee LeGrande/Brent Doble, 11-5, inc. Lewis/Ceman d. (8) Mark Kerins/Kevin Martin, 11-6, 11-1.
Sunday at the Sunkist AVP TOC Courtesy of AVPTOUR.com Apr 30,2000 Finals #4 Canyon Ceman/Brian Lewis vs. #7 Lee LeGrande/Brent Doble Capping a magical weekend was the cardiac kids Lee LeGrande/Brent Doble winning their 1st event as professionals here in Delray at the Sunkist TOC. The scores for the finals read 11-7 Doble/LeGrande in game 1. Game 2, Ceman / Lewis 11-4. Game 3, Doble/LeGrande 8-6. The winners took all 3 of their matches this weekend into the 3rd & deciding game. The semifinal match vs. Loiola/Rego will go down in the history books as one of the greats, & although it was hard to match the excitement of Saturday night, the final match here Sunday was close. Game 1, none of the game statistics were very telling as each team had problems at times siding out. The focus for Lewis/Ceman was to serve Doble, while Doble/LeGrande fed Lewis with a steady diet of serves. Game 2, was dominated by the steady play of Lewis/Ceman who won easily 11-4. The final game was a barn burner with Doble/LeGrande getting off to a hot start, up 3-1 in the game to 6. Lewy/Ceman tied the score at 3 all, & then each traded points until LeGrande/Doble were staring at game point, & a chance to win their 1st title. This is when the nerves tend to get the best of you, & Lee & Brent looked anxious on the next few plays. LeGrande was roofed by Lewis for 5 all, then Lewy dug a Doble crush & took championship point over to their side. At this point, Brent Doble came up huge. A nice match saving shot down the line for a sideout. Lee served the next ball to Lewy who tried to crush 1 angle but Doble closed the door for a 6-6 tie. After a side switch, Lee served Lewy again who tried to roll 1 over Doble down the line, bad idea, as Doble swatted it back hard. Match point again for Lee/Brent. Lee hammered a serve cross court to Lewy who again tried to rip an angle hit by the 6'6" Doble who clamped it straight down for the victory. Both teams had great tournaments & really put on a great show for the Delray crowd. Lee & Brent were emotional in acknowledging all the people responsible for giving them an opportunity to compete at this level. It was a great moment for these young men, & the AVP tour, as 2 new stars are emerging & will be a major force to be reckoned with on the 2000 AVP Tour.
New Big Kids on the Block Courtesy of BEACHMANIA.COM Doble/LeGrande defeat Ceman/Lewis in 3 in Deerfield AVP final. First tournament victory for both players. by Rick Capone April 30, 2000 -- Just when you thought it couldn't get any better than last night, it did. In another great comeback performance, Brent Doble/Lee LeGrande put together some solid defensive play, including 3 blocks in a row by Doble, to defeat Canyon Ceman/Brian Lewis 11-7, 4-11, 8-6 to win the Sunkist AVP Tournament of Champions in Delray Beach Florida. "They played a great match," Lewis graciously acknowledged after the match. "I've never seen them play any better than they did this weekend." In the 3rd place match, Jose Loiola/Emanuel Rego outlasted a hard charging, hard playing Mark Kerins/Kevin Martin 15-11. But the day, & the weekend, belonged to Doble/LeGrande who finally put it all together to win their 1st tournament. With the crowd split between the 2 teams, but loudly rooting for their favorites, Doble/LeGrande opened the match strong, taking a 3-1 lead in game 1. Ceman/Lewis came back quick to tie it 4-4. The 2 sides stayed close, as Doble/LeGrande did all weekend long. The score was tied 5-5 & 6-6 before Doble/LeGrande took the lead for good at 7-6. After that, it was just a matter of outlasting the tough defensive play of Ceman/Lewis. A Doble kill ended game 1 with the score 11-7. Game 2 was a different 1 completely, as Ceman/Lewis stormed out to a 6-2 lead. On the next play Lewis hit a smoker that hit LeGrande in the throat, knocking him over & sending his sunglasses flying. It definitely stunned him & it took a few points to get his game back together. By the time he did though, the score was 10-4 & Ceman/Lewis were serving for the game. A kill by Ceman after an awesome rally of great diving digs by both teams, gave them game 2, 11-4. Then the fun began. As they did last night, Doble/LeGrande dug in. After swapping 10 sideouts, Doble served 2 aces in a row to give his team a 2-0 lead. Lewis got the sideout on a kill, & then an attack error by LeGrande made it 2-1. A few plays later, LeGrande got a kill to make it 3-1, but then after a sideout, Doble made an attack error & Ceman got an ace to tie it 3-3. 3 sideouts later, LeGrande got a kill to take give his team the lead again, 4-3, but shortly thereafter, Lewey stuffed LeGrande to tie it up at 4s. A LeGrande ace brought up "tournament point" at 5-4, but a few plays later, 2 kills by Ceman gave Lewis/Ceman the lead, 6-5, & a "tournament point" themselves. A kill by Doble gave his team the sideout, & on the next play he stuffed Lewis to tie up the match once again, 6-6. Next play, Doble blocks Lewis once again, swatting the ball down with 1 arm off a Lewis attack attempt, & he & LeGrande were serving for the match. Next play -- a great rally -- then Lewis goes up for the attack, & for the 3rd time in a row, Doble stuffs Lewis straight down to end the game 8-6. As the crowd went crazy, LeGrande fell backwards into the sand, his arms raised in celebration. His partner came over & slapped his partner's chest in salute. "I definitely picked the right partner," LeGrande said after the match. "I believe in him, & he believes in me." Doble returned the thanks. "I have to thank my partner," he said. "He did all the things today that you need to do. He dug the ball. He hit the ball. He held it together. He was great." Both players also agreed that Lewis/Ceman played great on the day as well. LeGrande summed it up for both himself & his teammate. "Canyon & Lewis put up a great game. They are great players." So with their 1st wins under their belts, Doble/LeGrande have served notice that they are a team to watch out for this season on the AVP tour. On the verge of making into the finals a few times last year, this weekend they finally put it all together & won that elusive 1st title. It's a starting point & a win that will keep them smiling for weeks to come. Triple Doble & Kool J Win!!!

Pro volleyball returns to Santa Cruz for the first time since ’96 Santa Cruz Sentinel staff report May-25 2000 SANTA CRUZ — Yahoo! The party is back. With an infusion of cash from the corporate world, the beach kings are back in town. Not only are Karch Kiraly, Adam Johnson, Jose Loiola & some of the biggest names in beach volleyball are returning to Main Beach after a 4-year absence, but the sport is returning to its roots: No bleacher seating, a bikini contest, a qualifying tournament that gives locals a chance to compete against the elite, & a Memorial Day weekend date, which brings it back to its origin in 1961. Back in 1996, the last time the Association of Volleyball Professionals was at Main Beach, the money seemed to be limitless — $100,000 was awarded to the winning team of Johnson/Loiola, & Kiraly/Kent Steffes were in the midst of exceeding $2 million for their beach careers. But Jose Cuervo, which sponsored the big-money, 3-event Gold Crown, dropped its sponsorship when the beach game seemed at its peak. It had just become an Olympic sport & Kiraly/Steffes appeared in Santa Cruz fresh after winning the sport’s 1st Olympic gold medals. Yahoo! Sports has since picked up the sponsorship &, though the event has a smaller purse ($75,000), there's much to be encouraged about, even if the event doesn’t draw the crowds in excess of 15,000 as it did in its heyday in the early ‘90s. "We’re all excited to get back to Santa Cruz," Johnson said. "I’m looking forward to having a great show of fans like we have in the past. We’re just glad the AVP is back in town. We’ve always loved coming to Santa Cruz."

Loiola/Rego (15),Def. Metzger/Clark (13) Another awesome match as the Brazilians were pushed to the limit by the up and coming team of Stein Metzger and Ian Clark. In 2000, the AVP athletes have been stepping up the energy and enthusiasm with which they play the game. The matches this year have been heated and passionate. This match was no different as each side took turns getting "in your face." At the end of the battle the players exchanged many high fives in appreciation of the great match. The Brazilians are a class act all the way and with many top Brazilians choosing to compete on the AVP tour the bar has been raised and the Americans are raising the level of their play to combat the awesome talent of the foreigners. All in all, the tour has never been stronger.
Semifinal Winners Bracket:

Run of loser’s bracket needed for top-seed’s victory By JOSH NAGEL Santa Cruz Sentinel staff writer SANTA CRUZ — Top-seeded Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson still have a chance at reaching today’s AVP Santa Cruz Open final. But they’ll have to do it the hard way. Ninth-seeded Stein Metzger and Ian Clark defeated Kiraly-Johnson, 15-9, Saturday in a quarterfinal at Main Beach. Now, Kiraly and Johnson must run the table in the losers bracket to reach the championship game. If that happens they will have to beat the winners bracket champion twice, since the tournament is double-elimination. "On a hot weekend, you never want to play through the losers bracket," Kiraly said. "We could have played better. But the better team won." Metzger and Clark came out strong, only to allow Kiraly-Johnson back in the game. The underdogs regrouped, though, and put the game away with an impressive performance. "I’m definitely pleased," Metzger said. "It’s been a tough two weeks of practice. We’re new together, and we hadn’t started clicking until today." Metzger said it was gratifying to post his first win over Kiraly, whom he has admired since he was 6. "Karch is so dominant, I think half of the teams just fold," he said. "We started out well, which made the playing field more even. This is a big milestone for me." Kiraly, 39, is a six-time Santa Cruz champion, winning his first title in 1979. Metzger and Clark will face No. 4 Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana, who beat Paul Baxter and Mark Paaluhi, 15-9. The winners-bracket semifinals start at 9:30 a.m. and the losers-bracket games at 8:30. The final is scheduled for 4 p.m. Other winners-bracket semifinalists are No. 3 Canyon Ceman and Brian Lewis, who beat Emanual Rego and Jose Loiola, 15-7, in the quarters. They will face the outspoken second-seeded team of Brent Doble and Lee LeGrande, who pulled off a marathon, trash-talk filled 17-15 win over Nick Hanneman and Adam Jewell. "We started off struggling, but we smoothed it out," Lewis said. "This is where you want to be, in position for a chance to go at the title." Doble and LeGrande squandered match point at 14-13, then had to fight off Hanneman-Jewell’s match point before pulling it out. The fifth-seeded team of Mike Whitmarsh and David Swatik, last season’s money leader, lost in the first round and must also rally today from the losers bracket. The event, sponsored by Yahoo! Sports, is the second of 12 AVP Tour events this year. The winning team will share $16,000, while $10,000 will go to second place. Doble and LeGrande won the opening event, the Sunkist Tournament of Champions in Delray Beach, Fla., on April 28. Admission is free and spectators should bring a blanket or chair because bleacher seating is not available.
Fonoimoana wins with partner Blanton in fifth appearance at tournament By KIRSTEN FAIRCHILDS Sentinel correspondent
SANTA CRUZ — Eric Fonoimoana left Santa Cruz Sunday having achieved something special — his first professional beach volleyball championship won in his home state of California. Partnered with fellow Californian Dain Blanton, Fonoimoana made the most of his fifth appearance in Santa Cruz by winning the AVP Santa Cruz Open over the Brazilian team of Emanual Rego and Jose Loiola in a double final at the Main Beach. "It’s nice to get a win in California," said Fonoimoana, an eight-year veteran from Manhattan Beach. "To win a tournament where your friends can drive up and watch you, and then to win in front of them ... it’s great." Seeded fourth, Blanton-Fonoimoana entered the final match undefeated. The tournament format was double-elimination which meant that the sixth-seeded Brazilians, who lost in the quarterfinals Saturday, had to beat the Americans twice. Rego-Loiola managed to hand the Californians their first loss of the tournament, 15-11, but lost, 7-4, in the deciding match. "Yesterday, when we lost the one match, I knew we’d need to play seven today," Rego said. "They just had to play three. "I prepared my mind to play seven and that’s how I got my mind to go all day. But the first final match killed me." Fonoimoana was impressed by the Brazilians’ march into the final. "I knew it wasn’t going to be a cake-walk against them," the 30-year-old UC Santa Barbara graduate said. "I was surprised how fresh they were. They didn’t seem tired at all and they didn’t play that way. It was back and forth all the way through." Blanton and Fonoimoana, who split a $16,000 first-prize out of the $75,000 total purse, won two events on the tour in 1999 — Cleveland and Clearwater, Fla. They hope to be selected as one of the two American teams to compete in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, by their play in Federation of International Volleyball events. Rego and Loiola are the only team from the AVP Tour to have already qualified for Olympic play. Each country sends two teams to the Olympics, except for the host country, Australia, which sends three. "We finally got the spot in July last year," Rego said. "We won the world championships in France. Out of 24 FIVB events, they take the eight best results, and we won seven last year." From Santa Cruz, Blanton and Fonoimoana are off to an FIVB event in Rosarito, Mexico, to improve their chances of reaching the Olympics. "If the teams were decided today, we would go because we’re currently No. 2 in the standings (among Americans)," said Blanton. "But it won’t be decided until August 15th, so we need to play some more and erase some bad finishes." Californian teams finished in third and fourth place. Third went to Canyon Ceman and Brian Lewis; fourth to six-time Santa Cruz champion Karch Kiraly, and Adam Johnson.
Soquel grad has ex-girlfriend to thank for career By KIRSTEN FAIRCHILDS Sentinel correspondent
SANTA CRUZ — Collin Smith, the only Santa Cruz County competitor in the AVP Santa Cruz Open, can thank a former girlfriend for his foray into professional beach volleyball. When Smith, a Soquel graduate, wrapped up his collegiate volleyball career at Cal State Northridge, he went to Portugal for four months of professional indoor volleyball. After the season finished, Smith decided to move to southern California. "My girlfriend at the time lived in Hermosa," the 25-year-old said. "So I moved there and pursued the beach thing. It’s going well." Smith, who is in his second season on the tour, explained the differences between the two types of volleyball at a press conference Friday. "In the indoor game, it’s definitely more specialized," Smith said. "The prototype AVP player is one who’s quick, strong and agile. "You have to have an all-around game in beach. You need to cover more ground because there’s only two of you, not six." Smith and partner Bryan Ivie lost their first-round match, but won the first round of the loser’s bracket. However, the team didn’t make it past Saturday after losing in the next round.
Eric Fonoimoana’s not-for-profit foundation, "Digs for Kids" received a boost from haircutters at the Paul Mitchell tent Sunday. The stylists hosted a cut-a-thon with all donations going toward the charity. $1,000 was raised.
Fox Sports Net taped the match, which will air at noon on June 24 and at 10 p.m. on June 25. The network has signed on to be the carrier for all the stops on this year’s tour. Chris "Geeter" McGee was Fox’s emcee for the match and the part-time club volleyball coach from southern California amused the crowd by doing the "worm" across the court while decked out in a powder-blue leisure suit in the 85-degree weather. McGee encouraged the crowd to dance, do the wave and yell "Yahoo" after every successful block or dig. "I was here in 1996 and it’s definitely a different vibe this year," said Dain Blanton, who won Sunday’s tournament with Fonoimoana. "This is the first year that we don’t have bleachers. It’s nice having the grandstands, so the fans can see better, but it’s expensive. It’s just a different feeling here." To Fonoimoana, bleachers or not, he’s got the best job in the world. "You’ve got the sun and sand and good-looking people walking around," Fonoimoana said. "You’ve got sunshine and the ocean ... what a beautiful office. I love pretty much everything about beach volleyball."
Besides offering a free youth clinic on Friday, Sunkist kicked off its eight-stop AVP Youth Tour Sunday. Participants under the age of 18 competed in various divisions just down the beach from the professionals. Alisha Bertetta, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter on Monte Vista Christian School’s girls volleyball team, competed with Jessica Gysin of Aptos Junior High in the 16 and under division. "It was really great because in between playing you can go watch the pros," Bertetta said. "You could totally talk to the pros and what other sport can you do that in? "Volleyball is pretty much the only sport where you can interact with professionals. You can talk to them about how they’re playing. It’s fun." Bertetta said she’s grown up at the Santa Cruz Open and has learned a lot from watching the players over the years. "My favorite is Ricky Lutties," the 15-year-old said. "He’s a really big guy and a big blocker and really intense." "I‘ve been following him for a long time. I played with his nephew in San Diego and I got to play fours with him once." Bertetta and Gysin won Sunday’s competition for their second AVP Youth Tour title. The team won the AVP Youth Hermosa Beach title last summer and went on to win the Junior Olympics 14 & under division in beach volleyball. "I like playing in AVP events because you play on your own, but you get to watch the pros and learn a lot from them," said the 14-year-old Gysin, who’s also an outside hitter. "My favorite pro is Mike Whitmarsh — I like his fundamentals and how he blocks." Other winning teams included Soquel High’s Dillon Fitch and Nash Collins in the Boys 16 and under division. The team of Casey Davis and Eric Pauly finished second; Soquel’s Kyle MacDonald-Jones and Jed Collins were third. Clark Meyer and Sebastian Miller won the Boys 18 and under division. Jordan Beck and Jason Sanders, both setters for San Lorenzo Valley’s 6-2 offense this season, finished second with Mt. Madonna School’s Zack Donoghue and Chris Sun in third.

June 08, 2000 | Updated 3:47 a.m. PT "It's All Beachy Keen for AVP Tour " MIKE BRESNAHAN, Times Staff Writer
How unusual. In this, an Olympic year, the only noise coming from the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals is the deafening sound of . . . relative silence. No Chapter 11 filings. No bickering about Olympic qualifying with the governing body of international beach volleyball. No boycotts by AVP players. It's almost boring, which, paradoxically, is one of the least favorite terms of the AVP, making its annual trip to Hermosa Beach for a tour stop from Friday through Sunday. The AVP wants fresh, new & fun as it tries to re-create the sport, which ironically led to the only controversy this year--several rules changes are irritating upper-echelon players. The AVP did away with the 9-minute clock, which allowed a finite # of rallies in a match. When the clock ran out, so did a match, which sometimes ended with scores of 13-7 or 12-10.The clock was an ally of veteran players. Shorter matches meant potentially more productive days.Another rule upsetting beach veterans is the abolition of intravenous glucose treatment for players, who may replenish lost fluids via IV only if they have been eliminated from the tournament.A final new rule is the removal of the antenna at each end of the net, a subtle change to non-volleyball fans. A ball that touched an antenna, which extended about 2 feet vertically from the top of the net, was considered out. There are no longer antennae, throwing off a guideline players have been accustomed to since their high school days."I don't really like to change unless you give me a good reason to change," said Eric Fonoimoana, an 8-year pro. "I just don't see eye to eye with everything that's going on." Several players, upset at not being consulted before the implementation of the new rules, signed a petition & presented it to AVP Chief Executive Bill Berger. "It's like, 'What's next?' " one player asked. "We have no say."The new rules will remain in effect this season, Berger said."We're trying to bring the sport to what it really is," said Berger, in his 2nd year as CEO. "At any place in the country, beach volleyball has 2 poles, a net, lines & a ball. We're not doing this to penalize [players]. I understand they're not happy because they had it easy."We're trying to make it so the sport is more entertaining. For so long, this sport was boring. People don't pay money to be bored. There are too many other stimuli out there."Off the court, things might be on the upswing for the much-maligned tour, which filed for bankruptcy in November 1998 & was purchased in March 1999 by Spencer Trask Securities Inc.The Madison Avenue venture-capital company correctly budgeted for losses of nearly $1.5 million last year, but several new big-name sponsors have provided financial hope.Anheuser-Busch has come on board via its Michelob Light product. Ford, Yahoo! & Planters have also committed financially to the AVP. The incoming money from sponsors--"in the $3-million to $4-million level," Berger said--has the AVP thinking black ink instead of red. Or at least right on the borderline. "The year 2000 may be the first time in history that the AVP breaks even," Berger said. The AVP, in existence since 1984, reached the top of its popularity curve in the mid-1990s, but questionable management & extremely high payouts for participants led to financial straits. The tour was also stung by its failure to seize control of the Olympic qualifying process for U.S. teams.U.S. beach volleyball teams can only qualify for the Olympics by accruing points in international tournaments sponsored by FIVB, volleyball's world governing body. Some players openly boycotted the AVP in 1992, when it refused to let players under contract compete in international tournaments. But optimism within the AVP has risen with a passel of young players on the verge of creating a different identity for the sport.David Swatik, 27, emerged last year from a mediocre career, teaming with Mike Whitmarsh to win the Hermosa and Manhattan Beach opens.Dax Holdren, 27, & Todd Rogers, 26, stunned a field of international participants by winning an FIVB tournament Sunday in Rosarito, Mexico.Fonoimoana, 31, & Dain Blanton, 28, are 2nd among U.S. teams for Olympic qualifying. (With the exception of host Australia, which is allowed 3 teams, 2 teams from each country will qualify for Olympic volleyball, which starts Sept. 17.)Lee LeGrande, 29, & Brent Doble, 30, won their 1st AVP event last month in Delray Beach, Fla."What's happening here is a total changing of the guard," Berger said. "A changing of the landscape."Women's pro beach volleyball also has undergone change, the most important being the formation of the Beach Volleyball America tour. In recent years, the women didn't play under the umbrella of an official tour & merely tagged along with the AVP for a few events. The BVA, which conducted tournaments at Oceanside & Santa Monica last month, will be present at Hermosa. Sort of. In an effort to compile points for Olympic qualifying, 4 of the top 5 women's teams are skipping Hermosa for an international tournament in Italy. The BVA, like the AVP, doesn't count toward Olympic qualifying.Women can only earn points in FIVB tournaments. Jenny Johnson Jordan & Annett Davis will not be at Hermosa. Neither will Misty May & Holly McPeak. The top-seeded team at Hermosa is Nancy Reno & Linda Hanley, a pair that was seeded 4th at Santa Monica.Charlie Jackson, the BVA's chief executive, said he doesn't mind the player defections this weekend. The bigger picture, helping BVA teams qualify for the Olympics, is more important, he said."If they go & play in an event like that, it doesn't detract from our event," Jackson said. "I want our teams to do well in all international tournaments."

Lynn Chu's Hermosa Beach Report 6/11/00 My analysis of Ian/Stein this weekend
Their 1st match: Ian/Stein Vs. Paul Boyd/Jim Nichols Stein had 3 aces in a row to give his team the lead at 9-6 and Ian/Stein never trailed again. They ended up winning 15-6!
2nd match on Friday: Ian/Stein lost to Rogers/Holdren. I think it is because I wasn't there! =*( I was watching another match.
Sat 1st game: Ian/Stein prevailed in a thriller against Adam Jewell/Nick Hannemann. This match was giving me an ulcer 'cuz it was so exciting. There was a lot of showing off by both teams. Ian had some key stuff blocks here and there. If I can recall correctly, I think Stein added some important (and much needed aces and great defensive moves).
Sat 2nd match:
Ian/Stein played Fred/Anjihno. This match would take them to a 5th place finish, but Ian/Stein lost a tough one and earned a 7th place.
Not too bad this weekend, guys! We're all still very much proud of you!! Keep knocking on the door and it'll happen!
Before the match against Fred/Anjinho, Ian/Stein played against Wellman/Geibel. This was going to be a tough one as Ian/Stein were down 0-3 early on. It was a very difficult match to watch for me. Ian/Stein had a bunch of pals out all weekend, so their fans and friends propelled them to a pretty decent finish.
I also had my picture taken with Ian/Stein after they won the match with Adam Jewell and Nick Hannemann.
Stein's a great guy! He gave me one of his Nokia hats and signed it. It says Stein on one side of the hat.

LA Times article for AVP's Huntington Home-sand Advantage Lewis is Happy AVP's in Huntington Beach By: Michael Itagaki
The Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tour stops in Huntington Beach this weekend, and Brian Lewis couldn't be happier. "It's great to be home," said Lewis, who went to Corona del Mar High and Orange Coast College and now lives in Huntington Beach.Lewis, who has won just over $900,000 in his 11-year pro beach career, is enjoying a resurgence, playing some of his best volleyball ever. He has climbed to the AVP's No. 3 ranking this week with his partner, fourth-ranked Canyon Ceman of Manhattan Beach. Lewis, 32, is also looking forward to spending this week at home with his wife Pam and son Dylan, who celebrates his first birthday Saturday, another reason why Lewis loves that the AVP has scheduled half of its 12 tournaments in California this season. "In Hermosa Beach last weekend, the crowds were outstanding," Lewis said. "It sure beats the heck out of playing in some parking lot of a shopping mall in San Antonio, in front of, like, two or three people, and it's 150 degrees out there."I mean, this is beach volleyball, right? It needs to be on the beach."After watching the sport boom in the early '90s, when prize money reached millions with an accompanying major network television contract, economic mismanagement led to the AVP's financial reorganization last year. This season, the AVP's off-court outlook appears brighter, with several major sponsorships secured, including Anheuser-Busch, Ford, Yahoo!, Planters, Sunkist and Wilson."I'm cautiously optimistic," Ceman said. "[The AVP is] picking primarily beach spots and there are less tournaments so I think that's helpful. It seems like we're trying to do the right things."Among those things is reduced prize money. The Huntington Beach Open has a purse of $75,000, with the winning team sharing $16,000. Teams making the main draw will earn a minimum of $500."It is humbling to be playing for 30% less than we used to," Ceman said. "Brian made $200,000 in 1995 and this season, he'll probably make around $50,000. And both of us are playing probably as well as we have in our careers."Lewis' great jump serve, combined with both players' top-notch ball-control, passing and setting abilities have helped them climb the ladder although neither is an overpowering hitter.Lewis and Ceman have one second- and two third-place finishes in the three AVP events this season. "We've been consistent," said Lewis, who is trying to win his first title with Ceman."[Winning one] will happen. I'm not worried about it." Said Ceman: "It's not that we think we can't win, because we've both won with other guys, but it's a matter of putting a string together. We've been in two finals, and had five [third-place finishes] together, and in each case we can point to a specific reason why we didn't win the key match. "There's no phobia. I think we both feel it's coming." Lewis and Ceman got together after Lewis took some time off last season following the birth of Lewis' son. Lewis' absence left his former partner, David Swatik, to team with Mike Whitmarsh. Swatik and Whitmarsh won the Hermosa Beach tournament. "[Swatik] wanted to stay with Whit," Lewis said. "Canyon called me up, we got together, and two weeks later, we finished second at Belmar [N.J.]." In that single-elimination tournament, Ceman said a turning point came in a quarterfinal victory over Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana. "We're playing a best-of-three match," Ceman said, "and we lost the first game after I failed to side out three times in a row. Usually, if you lose the first game in a tight one, it's easy to fold up your tent."But Brian told me, 'Hey Canyon, it's no big deal; it just means we have to win in three games.' It's not necessarily what he says, but how he says it. He believes in the team, has faith in himself and the team and he projects that."He never blames his partners and he inspires better play in his partners. It's no coincidence that the great players all have that quality."

PLANTERS TRAIL MIX AVP CHICAGO OPEN The News(courtesy of avptour.com) Jun 26,2000 The sun shined on Chicago and the AVP Sunday, as the Planters Trail Mix AVP Chicago Open began its final day of competition. The day started early with losers bracket games kicking off at 8:30AM. The match of the morning pitted Bill Boullianne and Ian Clark against Mike Whitmarsh and birthday boy Matt Unger who turned 30 this weekend in Chicago. Clark/Boullianne stormed out to a seemingly insurmountable 12-3 lead, but Whitmarsh/Unger began to make things interesting with five straight points on the good side to switch down 12-8. The run continued as the duo scored all five points on the bad side to take the lead at 13-12, switching back to the good side with the game well in hand. They completed the amazing comeback winning the match 16-14.

Holdren - Rogers can't hold 14-6 lead; Kiraly injury Posted by: Newspress.com on 07/10/00 05:16:57 PDT
At first glance, Lee LeGrande doesn't look like a villain. But put him on a volleyball court and he's Boris Badenov in shorts. LeGrande stole the show in Sunday's championship match of the AVP Karch Kiraly Classic at East Beach.LeGrande, who tries to antagonize his beach volleyball opponents with an endless stream of chatter, and his new partner, Brazilian southpaw Franco Neto, staged one of the biggest comebacks in pro beach volleyball history by erasing a 14-6 deficit against local stars Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers. "I want to thank you Santa Barbara," said LeGrande, after the 17-15 triumph that earned his team the $16,000 first-prize check, "although I know you hated me." It's easy to hate a guy who punctuates many spikes with a primal scream, never hesitates to question a referee's call and, at least once a match, races under the net to strike a bodybuilder pose on the opponents' court. Early in Sunday's final, he kicked the ball over the announcer's stage toward the ocean after hitting a shot into the net.Naturally, his favorite athlete is John McEnroe. "For me to compete at a high level, I have to keep talking on the court," noted the 6-foot-5 LeGrande, who played with ex-UCLA standout Stein Metzger at Punahou High in Honolulu and helped Pepperdine capture the 1992 NCAA title. "I tried to be a gentleman at a few tournaments this year but we didn't have any success." The other half of "we" was Brent Doble, who combined with LeGrande to win their first AVP tourney in this year's season opener at Delray Beach, Fla. The duo split up three tourneys ago after their lowest finish in two years -- 13th place at Hermosa Beach. "In volleyball, you have to give everything to your partner and that wasn't happening with us," he said.LeGrande's antics are a stark contrast to the class and professionalism exhibited by Kiraly, a longtime AVP star who established a new career record with his 140th win on July 4, 1999 in Chicago. Kiraly, whose victory in last year's inaugural Kiraly Classic was his last one on the tour, suffered a groin injury during a match on Saturday. He tried to play Sunday but the pain was too intense, and he was forced to withdraw from his own tourney while trailing Doble-Metzger 5-3 in Sunday morning's semifinals. "I strained something in my groin or low abdomen on Saturday," said Kiraly, 39, who starred at Santa Barbara High and UCLA. "I tried to play through it but I wasn't jumping or running well today."I didn't want to risk further injury because there's a lot of important events coming up." Kiraly and his partner, Adam Johnson, forfeited their next match against top-seeded Canyon Ceman-Brian Lewis and ended up tying for fifth place with Brent Frohoff and Santa Ynez High product Larry Witt.Kiraly-Johnson cancelled their plans to go to Italy this week to compete in an FIVB Olympic qualifying tournament. After getting therapy, Kiraly hopes to play at the FIVB stop in France in two weeks. Rodgers-Holdren had long route to the final, after losing in Saturday's quarterfinals and dropping into the loser's bracket. They had to win five matches -- including 15-7 over Ceman-Lewis and 15-9 against Doble-Metzger in the loser's bracket final -- to reach the final while LeGrand-Neto only had to win two games. If Rogers-Holdren had scored one more point in the final, there would have been a second final to seven points. "That's what happens when you lose on Saturday (and have to come through the losers' bracket)," said Holdren. "We played six matches today and they played three. "We definitely got tired. We were tired the game before the final, too." Rogers-Holdren also came through the losers' bracket to beat Jose Loiola-Emanuel Rego for the title of the AVP Chicago Open two weeks ago. The difference was they lost in the winner's bracket final, which meant they played four games, instead of the six they had to endure in hot conditions on Sunday. The former San Marcos High teammates, who split $10,000, played near-flawless volleyball to overcome an early 4-1 deficit. After switching to the "good" side of the court (in terms of wind direction), they reeled off five straight points and took a 6-4 lead when Holdren made a one-armed block on Neto. Most of the crowd of about 2,400 was rooting for Holdren-Rogers and the loudest was Dax's cousin, Dare Holdren, the former Santa Barbara County football player of the year from San Marcos High. He had a comment after virtually every rally and managed to engage LeGrande in some conversations that seemed to distract the AVP star. Neto cut the deficit to 8-6 with an ace before the locals went on a 6-0 run. The duo always seemed to know where their opponents were going to hit, thanks to Rogers' amazing quickness and Holdren's solid positioning. "They used all their black magic up (building the 14-6 lead)," said LeGrande. "They were touching every single ball." After Neto was called for lifting the ball to make it 14-6, he huddled with his partner during the side change. "I told Lee we're going to a double final, but let's make them work," recalled Neto, whose first AVP win came last year in Muskegon, Mich. (next week's stop) with Brian Lewis. "We got a few points (on aces by each player) and went to the good side and got five points to make it 14-13. Then, they started feeling the pressure." LeGrande-Neto withstood eight game points by their opponents and had seven match points of their own. After Neto tied the score at 14 with a stellar dig and spike, Holdren grabbed the lead back with an ace. His next serve went into the net.Following a sideout, Rogers dug a wicked spike by Neto and could have ended the game but his cut shot went into the net. "I had chances but I didn't come through," said Rogers, an assistant coach at UCSB. "On the bad side, we didn't pass very well and on the good side, I wasn't getting up high enough to put muster on the ball." LeGrande made it 16-15 with a crosscourt spike and a shot that bounced off Holdren at midcourt. After 12 sideouts, Neto served the ball and Rogers' crosscourt shot sailed wide. "That's the best comeback I've ever heard of," said LeGrande. "I thought 14-9 was a good comeback. We're a good team and we're still learning what works for us."

New partners lack consistency; top seeds dislike Olympic process Sunday, July 16, 2000 By Cindy Fairfield and Tom Kendra MUSKGEGON CHRONICLE SPORTS EDITOR AND ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR Adam Johnson put on a long-sleeved black Nike jacket, brushed the sand from his sweaty brow and peered up at the puffy clouds dotting the sky. "If I would have known this was going to happen, I probably wouldn't have come," said Johnson, a professional beach volleyball player competing here this weekend in the Association of Volleyball Professionals' Sunkist Muskegon Open.Johnson, playing with substitute partner Adam Jewell, was the first top seed to fall into the loser's bracket of the two-day tournament when the fourth seeds lost to the upstart duo of Alika Williams and Devin Poolman 15-13. Johnson is the regular partner of Karch Kiraly, who stayed home in San Clemente, Calif., this weekend nursing a groin injury. "I decided to play at the very last minute and the plane ticket (from his hometown in California) cost me an arm and a leg," said Johnson. It was the first time Johnson, an 11-year veteran of the tour, had paired up with Jewell."We lost to a good team," Johnson said of Poolman and Williams, who were playing in their first tournament without having to qualify. "Anything can happen in the wind and it did. We gave up four points on the good side and you can't do that in these kind of conditions." A chilly northerly wind under partly cloudy skies kept players on their toes Saturday during the opening round of the tournament. "These are the windiest conditions we've seen all year," said Johnson, who will have to fight through the losers' bracket of the double-elimination tournament. Johnson and Kiraly are in second place in the points race for an Olympic berth. The AVP does not play a role in Olympic qualifying. Points are earned over a two-year period from competition on the Federal de International Volleyball Tour, in which Johnson and Kiraly have played in two tournaments this year. The duo had planned to play in Italy this week and France next week before Kiraly got injured.
Olympic qualifier needed Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers are not impressed with the Olympic qualifying process. The twosome came into Muskegon's tournament as the top seeds this week after a phenomenal shakeup in partners last week. "There should be an Olympic qualfier like there is in other sports," said Rogers. "You have to play in eight (international) tournaments over four years and a team could get their points early and not be in peak form or be hurt when the Olympics come around." Holdren and Rogers have won one FIVB event and finished seventh and 17th in two others. The twosome have played together since high school and college. They were finalists at Muskegon's tournament last year. The former top-seeded team of Brian Lewis and Canyon Ceman broke up last week. Lewis picked up David Swatik and Ceman is teaming with Mike Whitmarsh. They are seeded second and third, respectively. "Playing together for so long helps because we know what the other will do," said Holdren. "But this tournament felt like any other. Those guys have played with each other before so it's not like they're breaking in totally new people."
Neto to the rescue It is becoming common for Franco Neto to get a phone call whenever a top player is dumped by his partner.Neto teamed up with Brian Lewis at the last minute last year to win the Muskegon tournament. This year, Lee LeGrande came calling - make that begging - after he was dumped by longtime partner Brent Doble and Neto relented. "First I went to a practice and asked Franco to be my partner but he said 'No,' " said LeGrande. "I went back the next day to the gym and begged him until he finally said yes. I guess the squeaky wheel gets the oil." Neto and LeGrande, seeded sixth, sent Lewis and Swatik to the loser's bracket in one of Saturday's quarterfinal matches. That was after they overcame Collin Smith and Bryan Ivie earlier in an epic 18-16 match. "I'm so happy to be here," said Neto, a native of Brazil who now lives in Los Angeles. "Muskegon is the first tournament I ever won so I will always have a special place for it. I will never forget this place in all my life."
Quick exit for Goers It was not a happy return to Muskegon for former Spring Lake resident Pete Goers.Goers and partner Scott Davenport entered the tournament seeded 15th but lost their first two matches to become the highest seed to be eliminated. "We were not playing our best," said Goers. "In fact, we haven't been playing real well lately. In this kind of weather, you have to get on a roll early if you expect to win. It's too hard to make up points." Goers and Davenport fell behind 11-4 in their second match and lost 15-9. "It's always a pleasure to come back to Muskegon and see friends and family you haven't seen for awhile," Goers said. "I just wish the results had been different."
'The Hov' comes to town Tim Hovland, one of the true legends of beach volleyball with 65 Open wins to his credit, is in Muskegon as the AVP's television personality and its unofficial "party organizer." Hovland, 41, was busy rallying the players Saturday afternoon for what promised to be a long evening, starting with a reception at Great Lakes Downs from 6-9 p.m. and followed by a visit to the Kirby Grill in downtown Grand Haven."The Hov," who was known for his constant banter on the court and for ripping off his shirt after key points, proved earlier this year that he still has some skills. Hovland and Bill Boullianne finished ninth at the Hermosa Beach Open on June 11, highlighted by a win over Doble and LeGrande. A back injury has forced him back to the sidelines, where he is enjoying the tour's return to its laid-back roots. "We were mis-managed for nearly a year by people who were trying to make this sport a big business," said Hovland, who now works as a real estate agent. "It's a lifestyle. The fun that we used to have back in the 80s seems to be coming back."

Rain and Shine the Paul Mitchell AVP Virginia Beach Open is Fine!!! Courtesy of AvpTour.com The sun broke through cloudy skies at seven a.m. this morning, and the heat and humidity were already a factor as the crowd began to assemble for the day’s action. As first round action began, it was hot in the shade and the humidity was close to a 100%. Off the calm Atlantic, there was hardly a hint of wind.Fans lined the balconies of the beach hotels and the boardwalk and filled the bleachers around center court. On Feature Court One, a large crowd sat in beach chairs and many stood to watch the wearer of the familiar pink hat, Karch Kiraly as he and Adam Johnson took on a qualifier team. As play continued it was apparent that Karch Kiraly had recovered from the injury that had kept him off the court for a couple of weeks. He was his usual self-controlled, skilled, and confident. The first round went as anticipated with the higher seeded teams moving in the winner’s bracket. One game that had the fans complete attention was the match between Poolman and Williams vs Elliott and Salmon. This surprising young team played consistently well and won the match 18-16. By 11am the sun beat down on the beach and the heat was oppressive. The players continued on taking the changes in weather in stride and the fans saw the great pro beach volleyball they’d come to see. They are an appreciative crowd in Virginia Beach. When the second round began, it was Kiraly and Johnson vs the young team of Salmon and Elliott. The young team played well against such difficult competition, but Kirlay and Johnson prevailed, moving on in the winner’s bracket. By noon the skies were darkening and at 1:00p the rain began. At first softly, and the matches continued. But the rain took over, pouring out of the sky. Fans streamed from the bleachers and headed for shelter under the sponsor tents. Some locals had come prepared and broke out their umbrellas. Play continued but the rain pelted the sands so hard, the officials halted play. At 2:20pm the matches resumed. Light drizzle remained, as did the scores of the matches that had been halted. The clouds still threatened but the temperature had dropped considerably, making it more pleasant for players and fans alike. Then a half an hour later the sun returned, drying the sand, but leaving the railings and bleachers wet. This didn’t stop the AVP fans. They found their favorite spot, dried the bleachers, dumped water out of the seats of the beach chairs, or sat on towels. Soon the bleachers were full again, with fans decked out in sun block, hats, bathing suits, or tee shirts and shorts, all there to cheer their favorite teams on. One Quarter final match was long, dramatic, and exciting.Holdren and Rogers were down 5-0 to Garrido and Azevedo. Then at the turn, Holdren and Rogers took the court in their steady style, and came back, tied it up, and the match see-sawed back and forth, but Holdren/Rogers won after an extended match, 17-15. Dark clouds lingered over the ocean as the afternoon wore on but by 3:45p, there was still full sun but this time there was a cool breeze making the volleyball experience more pleasurable. When Karch and A.J. took Center Court for Quarter final action against Doble and Metzer, the bleachers were packed, the sand surrounding Center Court was stacked with fans, and fans lined the boardwalk. Karch and A.J. played almost flawless volleyball, winning the match 15-5. The rain couldn’t stop the action on the beach today at the Paul Mitchell AVP Virginia Beach Open as teams competed for a $75,000 purse. Other teams that could not be beat today were last weekends Belmar Champions,Mike Whitmarsh and Canyon Ceman, and the youngest player on tour, Larry Witt with veteran partner Brent Frohoff. The Action starts bright and early Sunday morning with losers bracket games going off at 8:30am, with the winners semis to follow at 9:30am. Check back all weekend for the latest scores and highlights.
Virginia Beach Posted by: NET on Volleyball Magazine Outdoor Forum A few notes from the AVP at Virginia Beach: The semis tomorrow morning will be Holdren/Rogers vs. AJ/Karch and Ceman/Whitmarsh vs. Fro/Witt . AJ/Karch looked good in really spanking mistake-prone Metzger/Doble in the quarter-finals. Stein/Brent scored the first 3 points, but then saw AJ/Karch run off 12 in a row to take total control. Frohoff/Witt won two very tough matches over Kerins/Martin (16-14, I think) and LeGrande/Neto (15-13) in the quarters. The surprise team of the day was Texan Riley Salmon and Jake Elliott (from South Carolina, I think)upsetting 3 higher ranked teams, including Aaron Boss/Mark Paaluhi in a 16-14 marathon side out duel at the end of the day. Salmon/Elliott lost only to Karch/AJ in the second round and will continue play tomorrow. In another excellent match-up, Chris Makos/Scott Davenport took out Reid Priddy/Brandon Taliaferro to stay alive for tomorrow's play. The AVP hits Virginia Beach and there's no results on the AVP Site. I wanna know who won and over which team. Thanks. It was there this morning. I was at the beach and during the semi-final between Frohoff/Witt vs Whitmarsh/Ceman, they stop play because it was raining and there were lightning. Frohoff/Witt was leading 4-3. Karch and AJ are waiting for the finals. I heard some official that they will resume play tomorrow.
Paul Mitchell AVP Virginia Beach Open Results Here!!! Courtesy of the AVP By Dan Vrebalovich It took seven tournaments and two weeks rest to ready Karch Kiraly to enter the winners circle for the first time this year. Adam Johnson welcomed back his steady partner with open arms after two weeks of unfamiliar partners and mediocre finishes. Kiraly/Johnson, off to an unusually slow start to the 2000 AVP Tour, seemed poised to breakthrough in early July at the Ford AVP Karch Kiraly Classic. Karch does not take kindly to others winning the tournament that bears his name, but his body did not cooperate, as he went down during a semifinal match with a pulled groin muscle. Karch was out for the rest of the Classic and would be forced to sit out the Muskegon and Belmar events. The story this week in Virginia Beach was the weather. Rain battered the eastern seaboard all week making travel and beach volleyball tournaments difficult to negotiate. Rain delays on Saturday would push play late into the evening. On Sunday the rain held off most of the day, but came crashing through the event site, thunder and lightning in tow shortly after the losers bracket semifinals. As finishing the tournament was in serious jeopardy, AVP Tournament director Matt Gage made the decision to shorter all games to 11.While Kiraly/Johnson were hoping to be the story of the weekend, Larry Witt and Brent Frohoff were writing their own. The rookie Witt and the legendary tour veteran Frohoff have slowly become a force to be reckoned with. For the past four events Frohoff/Witt have been knocking on the door with one 7th and three 5th place finishes. All their losses seemed to be narrow and a top four finish was close at hand. The duo chose Virginia Beach to breakout. Two wins over Belmar champs Whitmarsh/Ceman, and a win in the first game of the finals to push the tournament and Kiraly/Johnson as far as they could go. Seemingly a lock for Rookie of the year, young Larry Witt has hit the AVP running and will be a force for the next decade.Statements were made in Virginia Beach, Karch and AJ are back in the winners circle and Frohoff/Witt have most definitely arrived.

Pros Kicking Up Sand at Separate Beaches
by MICHAEL ITAGAKI, LATimes Staff Writer
Some of the world's best beach volleyball players will display their talents this weekend for local spectators, but the fans might just have to do a little legwork to see both the top men's and women's teams. The Assn. of Volleyball Professionals U.S. Open men's tournament is being held at Seal Beach, with the main draw beginning today at 9 a.m. The talent-laden field includes Olympians Jose Loiola and Emanuel Rego of Brazil and Americans Eric Fonoimoana and Dain Blanton in addition to the AVP's top-ranked teams. Two miles up the coast, the women's Beach Volleyball America tour stop is in Long Beach, also beginning at 9 a.m. today. Their field is headed by U.S. Olympians Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan of Tarzana."I think it's cool to have the best beach volleyball players all in one concentrated area," AVP President Bill Berger said. "Having the tournaments so close together is not a distraction for us and it is not a conflict." Charlie Jackson, the BVA's chief executive officer, said ideally he would not want his tour to competehead-to-head with the AVP, in such close proximity and on the same weekend. However, the tours did share a venue at Hermosa Beach for tournaments June 9-11. "It would be nicer if there were more events together like we had at Hermosa," AVP veteran Lee LeGrande said.LeGrande's girlfriend of 2 1/2 years is Rachel Wacholder, a former Laguna Beach High standout who is in her first full season of pro beach volleyball. Although LeGrande and Wacholder will be separated by only a 10-minute drive, LeGrande said they likely won't see each other play."Unless one of us gets upset," Le Grande said. Wacholder's partner Nancy Mason will have a similar problem. Her boyfriend is San Juan Capistrano's Adam Jewell, another AVP veteran playing this weekend. "What we had to do," Jackson said, "was mesh with the international tour, the Olympic qualifying series events and our schedule, so that the women had something nearly every weekend. It doesn't bother me we have conflicting dates this weekend. "I don't really know if we have a different audience, but I do know we have a lot of people who areinterested in the women's tour. I expect a really good crowd this weekend. For our first year, we've exceeded my expectations. We've had a full house at every one of our events and the players are pleased,we're pleased, and the fans are pleased." Fans who want to see the finals of both tournaments have a fighting chance Sunday. The BVA final is scheduled for approximately 2:30 p.m. just south of Belmont Plaza. The AVP final is scheduled for approximately 4 p.m. just north of Seal Beach Pier near Main and Ocean. Notes: The eight AVP teams advancing from Friday's 40-team qualifier to today's main draw of the U.S. Open at Seal Beach were: Reid Priddy (Hermosa Beach) and Brandon Taliaferro (San Clemente); Riley Salmon (Houston) and Jake Elliot (Charleston, S.C.); Sean Rosenthal (Hermosa Beach) and Jeff Carlucci (Hermosa Beach); Dave Smith (Santa Monica) and Jon Anselmo (Manhattan Beach); Geoff Pollard (Hermosa Beach)and Peter Tourigny (Manhattan Beach); Rich Lambourne (Tustin) and Jon Braunstein (Newport Beach); Justin Perlstrom (Laguna Beach) and Mike Minier (Irvine); Matt Riley (Santa Barbara) and Kenny Ardouin(Santa Barbara).
The eight BVA teams that survived Friday's qualifying tournament and advanced to today's main draw atthe Long Beach Open were: San Diego's Liz Pagano and Hermosa Beach's Julie Sprague; San Diego's Angie Kammer and Jennifer Kessy, formerly of Dana Hills High; San Diego's Deanne Johnson and Karen Helyer;San Diego's Dianne DeNechochea and Missy Ross; Hawthorne's Kaili Kimura and Pacific Palisades' Sarah Schroeder; San Diego's Barb Birnbaum and Erin Galli; San Diego's Caren Janc and Barb Nyland; San Juan Capistrano's Kristi Atkinson and Costa Mesa's Jenny Griffith.
Emotion lacking in early play BEACH VOLLEYBALL: Some teams competing in the Seal Beach and Long Beach Opens have taken a subdued approach. August 20, 2000 By SHAWN PRICE The Orange County Register SEAL BEACH - Blowing sand almost obscured the Olympic image that had been building all summer. It was so relaxed Saturday, everyone almost forgot they were playing for money. The main event of the AVP Seal Beach Open began as if awakened from a summer nap. A few players used the time to keep in shape for Sydney, the others sought to get out from under the Olympic shadow and just have fun.Up the road at the BVA Long Beach Open, the women chased the same idea. Sydney-bound Dain Blanton (Laguna Beach High) and Eric Fonoimoana, exiled from the tour since late June, were taken back into the fold after some legal wrangling and played well, looking like one of the AVP's best teams. They eased through the day and ended their afternoon with a 15-11 victory over Mike Whitmarsh and Canyon Ceman. After an early lead, Whitmarsh and Ceman battled back and retook the lead, 11-9, before Blanton scored his third ace and then fired two more kills to even things at 11. Another strong serve by Blanton put them ahead13-11 and Fonoimoana bombed Whitmarsh for gamepoint, 15-11.San Clemente's Adam Johnson, the usually silent partner to Karch Kiraly, got a chance to step out on his own, playing with Huntington Beach's Brian Lewis. Johnson and Kiraly were eliminated from the Olympic equation last week when Kiraly dislocated his shoulder in Belgium. Johnson and Lewis had a wild day, coming from behind to win their first game and holding on for a second victory before losing a see-saw battle with Lee Le Grande and Franco Neto, 16-14.Neto and LeGrande fought back from a 14-11 deficit to tie, then endured 11 sideouts before an ace and a spike by Neto won the match. 1st Round Action from the beach! Courtesy of AVPtour.com The day began with no cloud cover and by 9:00 a.m. when the tournament got under way, it was hot. On Center Court we started off with 25th seed Brian Ivie, who has announced he’s retiring from pro beach volleyball after this tournament, and Albert Hanneman took on Adam Johnson and Brian Lewis. This was a phenomenal match with Ivie/Hanneman trading points with Lewis/Johnson. Ivie and Hanneman were leading 14-12 when Lewis/Johnson worked their way back in. Lewis/Johnson won, after a long match with a huge crowd surrounding Center Court, 17--15. The crowd had settled in around Center well before play began, sitting on beach chairs and blankets. There are no bleachers set up for this event, as it was last year. The bright orange Sunkist shirts were easily discernable reminders of the continuing support of Sunkist, one of our fantastic sponsors. The workers in the Paul Mitchell tent were busy getting their wonderful products displayed, Yamaha Wave Runner sat under a protective umbrella and fans picked up Yamaha key chains. Saturday Action Wrap-Up As the winner's bracket moved along, Loiola/Rego vs Johnson/Lewis was a see-saw match, with amazing serves and digs by both teams. Jose and Emanuel won the match 16-14. Dax and Todd played a good match vs Neto/LeGrande trading points through the first ten points, then Holdren and Rogers, with their steady play moved ahead to win, 15-10. Whitmarsh and Ceman won easily over Garrido/Azevedo, 15-3, and the superior defensive play of Eduardo Bacil and Sousa's blocking brought them to a surprising win over Blanton/Fonoimoana, 15-6. In the contender's bracket, in the third round, Swatik/Unger vs Doble/Metzger the game was close, until the end when Doble/Metzger won 17-15. Brian Ivie and A. Hanneman won in their match over Williams/Boss 15-10, Martin/Kerins had another marathon match against Davenport/Delhoz where the score stayed 11-6 (Martin/Kerins) for a half an hour, then they finally pulled ahead and won, 15-8. A long and tough match was played by Frohoff/Witt where they were down 9--3 to Cardenas/Nichols. The local crowd was very vocal, cheering for Frohoff/Witt. Nichols/Cardenas were warned about delaying the game twice as they complained about the crowd's interference with their play. Frohoff/Witt won the match 15-9 after more than an hour of play. It's dark now as the tournament site settles in for the night awaiting tomorrow's battles. We'll be here tomorrow to bring you the scores and the updates. It was a good day for the Saturday play at the "Grand-daddy" of pro beach volleyball, the Manhattan Open. Good night from the staff, Anne Hodgson and Lara Potter.
Blanton, Fonoimoana Struggle !!! MIKE BRESNAHAN, Times Staff Writer Funny how fast the Olympic rings turn into targets. Recent Olympic qualifiers Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana learned that Saturday at the Manhattan Beach Open. One of two U.S. teams to earn a trip to Sydney next month, Blanton and Fonoimoana struggled throughout the first day of the most prestigious beach tournament on the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tour. The duo, seeded No. 2, narrowly won their first two matches against substantially lower-seeded teams, and lost to 10th-seeded Eduardo Bacil and Fred Souza, 15-6, in a quarterfinal of the winner's bracket. They are still alive in the double-elimination tournament, but barely. "People are making us work," said Blanton. "No one's rolling over, that's for sure. They'll be watching the Olympics and saying, 'Hey, I beat those guys." Fonoimoana and Blanton served ineffectively and had less punch on offense than usual. "I think we're tired," said Fonoimoana. "Our legs weren't as good as we'd really like them to be. But [Sunday] is a different story. We could do some damage and get back into it." Blanton and Fonoimoana weren't the only Sydney-bound team to struggle. Top-seeded Jose Loiola and Emanuel Rego, who live in Southern California and will represent Brazil in the Olympics, also had trouble Saturday, ekeing out a 16-14 victory over eighth-seeded Adam Johnson and Brian Lewis in a quarterfinal.Loiola and Rego play Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers in a winner's semifinal today. Bacil and Souza play Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh in the other semifinal.
Loiola, Rego Cap Volleyball Run !!! MIKE BRESNAHAN, Times Staff Writer A quick aside to beach volleyball teams at the Olympics: Don't do anything to further annoy Jose Loiola and Emanuel Rego.Angry they were not top seeded in the Olympics, Loiola and Rego took out their frustrations Sunday at the Manhattan Beach Open, capping a two-day undefeated run with a 15-13 championship victory over Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh at the most prestigious Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tournament. Loiola and Rego, who live in Southern California and will represent Brazil next month in Sydney, finished well ahead of every other team in the Olympic qualifying standings, but were stunned to find out Saturday they were seeded No. 2. In a departure from seeding protocol for the 1996 Olympics, the host country was given the top seeding, knocking Loiola and Rego into a potential semifinal against the second-best team in the world, third-seeded Jose Marco Ferreira and Ricardo Santos of Brazil. Most people assumed the teams would meet in the championship, but the seeding decisions by the Federation Internationale de Volleyball, the sport's governing body, ensures that won't happen. "It's because they don't want to see two Brazilian teams in the finals," Loiola said. "The last two years, about 89% of the finals [in international tournaments] have been Brazil vs. Brazil. They don't want to see the best teams in the finals. They want to see country vs. country." Bobby Clarke, a member of the FIVB executive committee, admitted the decision to give the host country the top seed was "a change from [the] Atlanta [Olympics]." But, he said, the FIVB planned all along to give Australia one of the top three spots. "It's for marketing," Clarke said. "They want to sell tickets. It's just that players and countries tend to take it personally. As in, 'That hurts me.' " Loiola and Rego put the hurt on other teams at the most well-attended Manhattan Open in years. The duo faltered only slightly, allowing Ceman and Whitmarsh to come back from a 13-7 deficit to tie the championship match. But Loiola delivered an ace and Ceman hit long. "This proves we're peaking at the right time," Loiola said. The same can't be said for the U.S. team of Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana, who finished seventh. They were eliminated after a 15-3 loss to Eduardo Garrido and Paulo Azevedo. "I always want to come here and win," said Fonoimoana, who played and later coached at Mira Costa High, a couple of miles from the tournament site. "We didn't deserve to win."
Loiola, Rego roll on the beach !!! August 28, 2000 By SHAWN PRICE The Orange County Register MANHATTAN BEACH -- Jose Loiola and Emmanuel Rego are doing what an Olympic-bound team should be doing. Too bad they represent Brazil. They met every challenge at the AVP Manhattan Beach Open, coming from behind and holding off a laterally by former Olympian Mike Whitmarsh and Canyon Ceman to take the final, 15-13.Loiola served four aces and both Brazilians were strong at the net. And though Whitmarsh and Ceman started well and their rally was almost successful, consistency was what mattered."It proves to ourselves that we're in a groove," Loiola said. "It means we're peaking at the right time."Rego was more analytical. "It's a big step for us to go to the Olympics very confident," Rego said. "This was part of our plan. We planned to win here, and we plan to win in the Olympics. But we still have four or five points to work on like more defense. There were too many easy balls today." Whitmarsh and Ceman opened a 5-1 lead but had it crumble against the Brazilians, who had beaten them in the winner's bracket final, 15-6. The American duo rallied from 13-7 with a second ace and three solid kills from Ceman, but the Brazilians were able to get the momentum back. The frustration for a Whitmarsh and Ceman team that had played well over the weekend was great and pushed Whitmarsh, 38, even closer toward possible retirement. "I didn't block very well, and Canyon didn't serve very well," he said. "We started too late. It was one of my worst blocking games of the year. At least we fought back and didn't roll over that was the positive."
Participants scheduled to play:
Men Holdren, Dax / Clark, Ian LeGrande, Lee / McGee, Chris(Geeter) Post, Ryan / Hansen, Dane Salmon, Riley / Elliot, Jake Unger, Matt / Hanneman, Albert Ceman, Canyon / Unger, Adam
Women Schuster, Leanne / Mason, Nancy Pagano, Liz / Wachholder, Rachel
’Lode serves up tall order of talent By Tim Mutrie Aspen Times Sportswriter
Tall and tanned, some of nation’s top beach volleyball players fought their way up through brackets Saturday and Sunday in preparation for Monday’s finals in the men’s and women’s open divisions.
Aspen’s 28th annual MotherLode Volleyball Classic, dubbed the premier volleyball tournament east of the Pacific Coast Highway, enjoyed splendid weather for play over the weekend, while spectators took in the free event at various sights around Aspen.
By nightfall, winners in all 15 divisions will be crowned, among more than 600 participants.
“There are a lot of good teams here,” pro player Ian Clark noted Sunday afternoon. “It’s going to be a battle to get through.”
Clark, a native of Boulder and six-year Association of Volleyball Professionals tour player, took second in last year’s MotherLode, playing with partner Dax Holdren, the No. 2 money winner of this year’s AVP tour.
The twin towers of Holdren and Clark are teamed up again in this year’s tourney and seeded second, though the two don’t normally partner together.
“This is the end of the season, and we’re here to have fun,” said Clark, who was spotted getting into the spirit Friday night at Eric’s Bar. “Volleyball is kinda secondary, not that we’re not here to win.”
“We’ve been pretty successful so far, as far as the fun goes,” Holdren added with a chuckle, as the two prepared for another match later Sunday.
“It’s a good time,” Clark said. “It’s beautiful playing here.”
“Look around,” added Holdren, spinning to take in the mountain vistas from Koch Park, where the main events are played. “We’re used to playing in L.A.”
The No. 3 seeds in the women’s open, Rachel Wacholder and Liz Pagano, agreed that the competition is stiff this year on the women’s side as well.
“Last year there were only two pro teams; now there are four,” Pagano said Sunday afternoon. “And these other teams, they may not be on the tour, but they’re competitive. They’re scrappy, they send everything back over.”
The two Beach Volleyball Association tour players beat locals Catie Vagneur-Fleischer and Emily Bakker Saturday but lost Sunday to the No. 2-seeded team of Pat Keller-Killiany and Allison Block. If they are to win, Wacholder and Pagano will have to battle their way back through the loser’s bracket.
“We’ll just do it the long way,” Pagano said. “We came to Aspen to play some games, so we’ll play some games.”
“Our pro tour is so busy, we don’t get many chances to play in fun tournaments,” Pagano continued. “The MotherLode is laid-back, and we all have fun hanging with all the other players.”
Wacholder, a 1997 graduate of the University of Colorado, said she was excited to have the opportunity to come to Aspen and play in her first MotherLode.
“I’d been to Aspen in the winter, and I love Colorado,” she said. “I take every chance I can to come back.”
Denver-area resident Jamey Martin, the No. 7 seed in the men’s open division with partner Ryan Lindstrom, crafted himself a flamboyant hairdo and beard combo for his third MotherLode appearance.
Martin, an ATM repairman, sported bright yellow hair cinched with rubber bands into more than a dozen tufts and highlighted with orange blaze to go with his beard. Though Sunday afternoon, awaiting his third match, he said there wasn’t anything special about his hair. “It’s always one color or another,” he said.
“I think this is the strongest field I’ve seen,” Lindstrom, his partner, said of his third MotherLode tourney.
“This is definitely the most competitive MotherLode I’ve played in,” Martin added.
“Should be fun, eh?” Martin said.
MotherLode volleyball action continues through tonight. The finals in the women’s open division begin at 2:30 p.m. today at Koch Park, with the men’s open finals following at 4 p.m

Clark and Holdren were seeded second in the tournament and never lost a match. A total of 65 teams were entered in the Men's Open.
Women's Open -- Nancy Mason and Leanne Schuster won the Women's Open final. The number one seed and winners of the 1998 Open, remained undefeated in this year's Open.
