Top-seeded Bill Boullianne and Ian Clark, who won the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event in Mexico, won only one of three matches Saturday. The chant of "USA, USA" at North Avenue beach on Sunday was fitting for the occasion. Not only was it the 4th of July, but at center court, inside the temporary stadium, hundreds of fans witnessed the record-breaking performance of the greatest player to ever set foot on the sand. The man in the pink Speedo hat. Karch Kiraly and partner Adam Johnson defeated the all-Brazilian team of Roberto Lopes and Franco Neto 15-7 to win the AVP-Paul Mitchell Grand Slam event. Fittingly Kiraly served for the winning point but was dumbfounded when Lopes and Neto did not react. The point was awarded to Kiraly and Johnson for the championship. "The score was so large that our intention was (to congratulate) Karch," Neto said. "People were upset but it was out of respect. They are the best. The most important thing was that it is Karch's win." Kiraly is now the Association of Volleyball Professionals career leader in victories at 140. He had been tied with Sinjin Smith, with whom he won his first tournament at age 18. "It really felt good to get it over with," Kiraly said. "It was very strange to win it that way, but I guess it was out of respect. It is probably a tradition they have, that we don't. It took away from the excitement, but nevertheless it's a great win." Lopes and Neto have made it to several finals but never have won a championship. "Karch has more fire and heart," Neto said. "He is the best in the world." Kiraly and Johnson, the No. 1 seeds, did not have an easy road to the championship game. After dropping the first game to Lopes and Neto 15-6, they had to battle back through the losers' bracket. From there, Kiraly and Johnson defeated Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers 15-13. They then eliminated third-seeded Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana, one of the hottest teams on tour this year, 15-12. The No. 1-seeded women's team also prevailed after battling back from the loser's bracket. Liz Masakayan and Elaine Youngs defeated Annett Buckner-Davis and Jennifer Johnson-Jordan 15-9, claiming their third win in a row on tour. "We dug deep for energy in that last game," Youngs said. "It was great, the fans were into it and we wanted it." Buckner-Davis and Johnson-Jordan also finished second to Masakayan and Youngs last weekend.

Here are a few other sketchy details I learned from a friend who played in the Motherlode this year. Valinda Hilleary/Pat Keller Killiany won the women's open division. Dane Hansen and Ryan Post are from Colorado and win regularly in other area tournaments. Some of the other men's open teams that finished in the top 8. (I don't know the actual finishes.) Lee LeGrande/Kevin Martin Curtis Griffin/Eric Moore (former AVP players and 3-time defending champs) Rob Baily/Jason Robertson (2-time USA Volleyball grass national champs)
The crowd was really impressed with Dax Holdren's steady and heady play, Kevin Martin's ability to chase down and dig so many balls, Lee LeGrande big block and expressive antics, and Ian Clark's all around game. Dax and Ian looked like the best team until the final when Hansen/Post were flawless. Dax moved very well and showed no effects from the ankle injury he suffered last week. All the AVP players were open and friendly with both other players and the crowd. John Anselmo played too, but I don't know where he placed. It was a family weekend for the Holdren's and Anselmo's. Dax's and John's wife played, too. The whole weekend was a lot of fun and volleyball played at a high level in the open division.

Rob Heidger and Kevin Wong of the United States captured the Oldsmobile Alero Beach Volleyball Series Gold Medals.
Heidger (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Wong (Playa del Rey, Calif.), the sixth-ranked team on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, scored a 15-10 win in 43 minutes over Javier Bosma and Fabio Diez of Spain in the men's Gold Medal match to share the $20,000 first-place prize.
Heidger and Wong, who have been playing together since June, scored their first professional wins on Wong's 27th birthday. The match was tied seven times as the Americans scored four-straight points to take a 13-9 lead. The most improved team on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour in 1999, Bosma and Diez stopped the run to cut the lead to 13-10, but Heidger and Wong scored two-straight points to end the match.
