Quotable Quotes Section
By Jocelyn Chu with her permission.

"Sometimes, the best way you can find out about a player is what his fellow players have to say about him.  An even better way to get a feel for a player is to see what he has to say about his fellow players."

Player's Quotes about Ian:

VOLLEYBALL GREAT KARCH KIRALY ON AVP PLAYER  IAN CLARK:

Karch Kiraly:"I have been really impressed with the way that Ian has been playing, especially in places like down in Brazil.  All of a sudden, he will just take over a game.  He will be playing with a partner and having been switching off blocking and defensive duties.  Then, he decides that he is going to jump serve every time and block as well.  He did it down in Mexico last year.  He and Bill (Boullianne) played so well in Acapulco.  There are not many players that have the strength and endurance to be able to jump serve every time, run to the net and block along with receiving a lot of serves.  He is pretty amazing, especially in hot conditions."

Karch Kiraly:"This year, Ian and Beef (Bill Boulliane) won their first tournament  in (Acapulco) a few weeks ago. I think the U.S.teams are going to be competitive, they just haven’t been as good as the Brazilian teams, on average, over the last couple of years."

Karch Kiraly:(FIVB shorts)"The sponsors aren’t going to be happy having  their athletes look like geeks and wearing  stuff that will never sell. If you are over about  6’3", the shorts have to be 8" above the middle of your knee cap, which is going to be  a big adjustment for guys like Bill Boulianne or Ian Clark, who play with shorts that are just a little above the knee cap."

Karch Kiraly:(Acapulco)"I can't quite figure out why they're able to serve that ball(Mikasa) better than the other guys,I don't think that either of them are as good jump servers as Adam or Brian Lewis or some of the other guys(on the AVP).But they're certainly better than anybody else with that ball."

Karch Kiraly:(Acapulco)"In the semifinal,Ian picked up some balls, and I've never seen him move so fast before. He made some great defensive plays, and so did Bill. They're not noted for their cat-like moves in the backcourt, but they both chased down some shots there":

Karch Kiraly:(nbcolympics.com-Athletes Voice)"I was tabulating up the results to see where teams stand because, for those who are not familiar with it, to qualify for the Olympics, teams have to play in at least eight foreign events on the FIVB tour. Then, out of all those events accumulated through August 15th of the year 2000, the best eight are tabulated. And in looking at all the American teams right now, Rob Heidger and Kevin Wong have the best eight results. Adam (Johnson) and I have the second-best results, although we have only seven results.Eric Fonoimoana and Dain Blanton have, depending on an interpretation of the rules, either no blank spots to fill in or two blank spots to fill in. They either have eight results or six results. We're still waiting for a clarification. But they might be about third, not too far behind us. Then Sinjin Smith and Carl Henkel fourth, then Bill Boullanne and Ian Clark fifth. So, if they were to take the Olympic qualification format and make the cutoff today, we would qualify -- but barely."

VOLLEYBALL GREAT MIKE DODD ON AVP PLAYER  IAN CLARK:

Mike Dodd: (NBC Olympics Beach Volleyball // News // 01 Dec 1999)                              "Although the FIVB men's event this weekend in Vitoria, Brazil  is technically the last event of 1999, it seems more like the first event in the final push to see who will represent the U.S. in Sydney. American teams in the qualifier include David Swatik/Eric Fonoimoana, Dain Blanton/Ian Clark, Adam Jewell/Stein Metzger and Jeffry Long/Gaston Macau. Blanton/Clark lost their first match but are still alive in the losers bracket.Ian Clark is one of my favorite players and a quality guy who I would love to see have a little more success."

Mike Dodd: (NBC Olympics Beach Volleyball // News // 21 Apr 2000)
"Congratulations to Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers for winning the men's open in Deerfield Beach ... also to Ian Clark and Bill Boullianne for a long-awaited trip to another final. Clark and Boullianne won the FIVB event in Acapulco about a year ago and proceeded to run together a string of 25ths and 17ths that would knock your Aunt Connie's socks off."

:>).......lol....hehehe.....Unca Nick has socks older than MD!!!

Bill "Beef" Boullianne: "Ian is a dynamic guy. You never know where he is coming from or where he just was. I like people like that. A good friend is hard to come by. As a player he can do everything and is always capable of winning tournaments or pulling out the big play that gets you over the top.  He could jump a little higher if he could only stay away from the dessert tray."

Dain Blanton: "Ian is a great guy and fun to be around. He has great energy. He has always been a difficult opponent and has a huge hammer of an arm. Ian hits a very heavy ball."

Eric Fonoimoana: "I think Ian is a fierce competitor who wants to win as much as anyone else.  He has good hands and a big blocker.  I've only practiced with him but have not played in a tourney with him.  As a friend, he has a good heart and is fun to be around."

Brent Doble: "Do not let the gold chain, piercings or sometimes odd colored hair fool you. Ian is a pussycat.  A fiery competitor on the court yet always composed, off the court always approachable. A great blocker and guy who brings serious heat."

Lee LeGrande: "Ian is an incredibly talented person.  I have known Ian for the past eight or nine years and I have seen him grow a ton. The first time I met Ian he was transferring from Santa Barbara City College. He was their player of the year, which is great unless he is trying to take my spot on the starting six. It quickly began as one of the biggest competitions of my life. Ian was pretty quiet for the first few months but he quickly warmed up to our team and was a huge part in our 1992 NCAA National Championship reign. Ian also can be summed up by saying you can take the man out of Vegas, but you cannot take the vegas out of the man."

Stein Metzger: "As for Ian, I find his game suits his personality off the court.  Simply put he is a hard hitter.  In the friendship realm, I would say we have never been close but have always enjoyed each other's presence as we both share a lust for life and adventure even if our interests differ slightly."

Albert Hannemann: "Ian is one of the most marketable volleyball players out there right now. He is a great player that is real to himself. He likes to have fun but takes care of business when he plays tournaments."

Ian Clark's Quotes about other Players :

From
Ian Clark on Karch Kiraly: "Clearly Karch Kiraly exemplifies the type of athlete that all volleyball players model themselves after.  His resume is second to none in the world of volleyball and one of the truly dominating careers in all of sports."

Ian Clark on Mike Dodd: " I remember one time I was riding in a cab with Mike Dodd, and he asked me about living in Vegas. I told him it was awesome, and he said: "I wish I would have done that at some time in my life." For me,that kind of validated it. Because if you look at that guy,he's had a dream life. And when he said that,it kind of made me realize how fortunate I am to have the opportunity to do this kind of thing (volleyball)and how foolish it would be not to take advantage of it."

Ian Clark on Bill Boullianne: ""One of the great things about professional volleyball is the camaraderie among the players, and above that, the creation of new friendships. Bill and I have become very good friends. We  have battled through success and adversity. Foremost, however, I will always remember reaching the top of the medal stand together in Mexico.  That moment is the highlight of my career thus far.  I could not have made it there without him. I only hope he will reach the medal stand as many times as he makes it to the dessert stand."

Ian Clark on Dain Blanton : "I played with Dain Blanton at Pepperdine and have known him for about 10 years.  Dain has always been a great competitor and an extremely hard worker.
As a result, he is a tremendous athlete and it has shown in the success he has had on tour.  I expect him to win his fair share of tournaments over the next few years."

Ian Clark on Eric Fonoimoana : "Eric Fonoimoana probably trains harder than any athlete on tour.  He is at the top of his game and is playing extremely well.  He has had a lot of success in his career and will continue to in my opinion.  The other thing about Eric that impresses me most is his respect for the game and his desire to give something back.
I give him my full support and wish him the utmost success with his newly created foundation DigsForKids."

Ian Clark on Brent Doble : "Brent Doble has hit the tour with a bang over the last season and with his first win this season.  He is playing great volleyball and has improved his overall game.  He is a force to be reckoned with."

Ian Clark on Lee LeGrande : "I have known Lee LeGrande since our Pepperdine days.  He is a dynamic personality with a great outlook on life.  He has been busting his butt and is playing better than I have ever seen him. My hat is off to him for earning his first victory."

Ian Clark on Stein Metzger : "I am fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to play with Stein Metzger.  He is a great competitor and brings a much needed  energy and flair to the game. I guarantee you will see him in the victory circle in the near future."

Ian Clark on Albert Hannemann : "I think Albert Hannemann is one of the most underrated players on our tour.  In addition, he does a tremendous job of marketing himself and representing the tour and volleyball in a positive way.  He has a strong love of the game and an even stronger willingness to get others involved in the sport.  I think he has done a lot to improve the image of both the sport and players of beach volleyball."

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT IAN CLARK & PRO BEACH VOLLEYBALL:

More questions to come stay tuned!!!

C'MON & ASK THE I-MAN YOUR QUESTIONS HERE ???

In this section you the fans get to ask Ian Clark whatever you want to know about VolleyBall and life on and off the AVP tour!!!

Hello,Ian? We want to ask you a few questions. These are the questions most fans want answered.

1.) Can you send me an autographed photocard?

Sure thing but there is a catch, you must join my "IAMANIMAN" fanclub on Yahoo
and win  one by  playing the Ian Clark trivia quiz. This is my private, members only club but   you can easily join by sending us an e-mail at mailto:spiro@monmouth.com for an invite.

2.) Do you have a scrapbook or journal? If so, how long have you had it?

Yes,I keep certain clippings and articles fans have graciously cut out for me and I recently was given a journal as a gift and plan on using it shortly.

3.) Did you play v-ball in high school or college? If so, where?

Ian attended Boulder High School and they did not have a boys' volleyball team.  His only chance of playing was driving a few hours back and forth to Denver once a week with friends.Ian and his pals played on a men's club team called the "Front Range".After graduating from Boulder High School, Ian moved onto Santa Barbara City College (S.B.C.C.).Ian also graduated from Pepperdine University and played an integral role as middle blocker on the 1992 N.C.A.A. championship team.

4.) Who were your major influences in the game growing up?

At Santa Barbara City College (S.B.C.C.),I received tutelage from Rick Olmstead in his
first year and under Jay Hanseth, a former beach pro. Also Ian credits Pepperdine's Marv Dunphy as "one of the best coaches around that is a great guy and role model".To this day, Ian credits his mom and dad and his sisters and extended family as his main supporters.

5.) Who has been your most successful partner in your career?

In the 1994 AVP season my first, I partnered with 3 players, Dain Blanton, Mike                 Schlegel, and Wayne Seligson finishing as high as ninth place.I teamed up  with friend and former Pepperdine University teammate,  Dain Blanton, throughout the 1995 season and we earned two career high fifth places.During the 1998 season, I made the decision to play on the A.V.P and Federation Internationale de Volleyball (F.I.V.B.) Tours with
Bill "Beef" Boullianne. We earned three  notable finishes by placing 3rd in France,3rd again in the Canary Islands, and then 4th in Belgium. In the 1999 F.I.V.B. event at Acapulco, Mexico Bill Boullianne and I placed 1st and collected the gold medal, trophy, and $30,000 in prize money.Bill Boullianne and I have become very good friends.  We  have battled through success and adversity. Foremost, however, I  will always remember reaching the top of the medal stand together in Mexico. That moment is the highlight of my career thus far. I could not have made it there without him."

6.) What would you say is your most memorable accomplishment is in the sport?

It was the F.I.V.B. event Acapulco, Mexico, that will be forever etched into my mind.
We posted a 5-0 record by beating some of the top teams and reached the winner's circle when Bill Boullianne and I defeated the Brazilian tandem of Para Ferreria and Guilherme Marques by the score of 15-10 and collected the gold medal, trophy, and $30,000 in prize money.Along with winning the N.C.A.A. championship at Pepperdine, and another highlight of my indoor career was winning the gold medal in the United States Olympic Festival in 1993.

7.) Will you teach the game to others, as well as your own children, when you retire?

Yes,someday if I'm blessed with children I would love to teach them the wonderful sport of Volleyball as it has given me so much joy in my life.Coaching someday is a possibility.

8.) Do you plan on participating in the Olympic games in the year 2000 in Beach Volleyball in  Sydney, Australia? If so, who would you want as your partner?

You bet your speedos ,I would love to represnt my country in Sydney and am currently working towards that as my main goal.Bill AKA BEEF Boullianne of course.

9.) What beach (or beaches) do you practice at? What does your typical days training consist of ?

Ian's training site in the past has been at Pacific Palisades,Ca. But these days he can be found practicing and training hard all over the beaches of Southern Califonia.Who knows,he may be down at your local beach right now.His typical training regimen will be described in a future segment of his website, stay tuned.

10.) How many tournaments (including international events) have you won in your career? Can you name your partner at the time, the place where the event was and the year that you won?

One tournament in the 1999 F.I.V.B. event at Acapulco, Mexico where Bill Boullianne and I placed 1st and collected the gold medal, trophy, and $30,000 in prize money, but I'm working very hard to increase that number in the near future and just recently placed 2nd again with Bill at the Oldsmobile Alero Beach Volleyball Series U.S. Olympic Challenge in Deerfield Beach,Florida in April of 2000.

11.) Do you do anything that is superstitious before games or tournaments? If so, what are they?

Like many players on tour, there is something to be said for a pair of lucky shorts. And considering the fact that I won Acapaulco,Mexico with Beef, I'd say those shorts we won in are lucky charms. In fact, we went on to win two more matches in those shorts in the very next FIVB event, so you could say we we're 8 and 0 in those shorts.
We also found a lucky button and marble out on the warm-up courts , we kept those in our pockets during the weekend. As of right now, they're in the bottom of the beach bag somewhere.

12.) Which past and present volleyball  players would you absolutely love to play with?

13.) Do you  receive a lot of fan mail?

Yes,I do receive my fair share but not too much to get overwhelmed by.I would always enjoy getting more thou, so I encourage fans  to write to me at the AVP address and they will forward it to me.Please feel free to write me here:
